4A Daily News – Thursday, December 6, 2012 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Experience the Season concerts The North State Symphony's annual holiday concerts feature two female singers, beautiful Baroque and classical selections for the season, a new location in Chico, and new time in Redding. "Experience the Season!" also marks the NSS' annual appearance in Red Bluff . Dara Scholz, soprano, and Molly Mahoney, mezzo-soprano, join the NSS for these special holiday season concerts. According to Music Director Kyle Pickett, the Christmas season has produced some of "the most sublimely beautiful music." Each concert will include selections from "Messiah," as well as music by Vivaldi, Brahms and others. As in past years the concert will conclude with an audience sing-along of traditional carols. The series of performances opens in Chico on Friday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in a new location for the North State Symphony — St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 416 Chestnut St. Tickets, at $30 adults and $10 children, are available in advance at the University Box Office, 898-6333. On Saturday, Dec. 15 the Symphony moves into Red Bluff's State Theatre. The concert, under the auspices of the Tehama County Community Concert Association, is free to their members. Nonmembers can purchase tickets — $20 all seats — by calling the NSS Office, 898-5984. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 16, Redding's Our Lady of Mercy Church hosts the final performance of "Experience the Season!" Advance tickets, at $30 adults and $10 children, are available at the Cascade Theatre Box Office, 243-8877. "We especially want to be sure our Redding patrons know the Dec. 16 concert begins at 4 p.m., because the time was originally different," said Pickett. Glorious Sounds of the Season and Chico concerts, an intermission dessert reception is included with the price of admission. Selections performed at all three concerts will include Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on Greensleeves," Handel's "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd," "Gloria: O Gloria in excelsis, Amen," and "But Who Shall Abide," Vivaldi's "Gloria: Laudamus te," Charpentier's "Noels for Orchestra," Brahms' "Lo, How a Rose," Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel: Evening Hymn," the Martin/Blane song, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and the traditional work, "Three Spanish Christmas Carols." Scholz is a 1998 graduate of St. Olaf College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and was an active member of the St. Olaf Choir, Chapel Choir and the Early Music Singers. She received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance in 2006 from the University of Minnesota. Currently Scholz is Director of Music at Our Divine Savior Catholic Church (Chico), organist and choral accompanist at Bidwell Presbyterian Church, and is an adjunct instructor for the CSU, Chico Music and Theater department. Mahoney won First Prize in the Symphony's Young Artist Auditions in 2010 and performed with the NSS last year. Recently, she performed in The Lamplighter's production of "The Mikado" and will be seen in an upcoming production of "Princess Ida" in January and February 2013. Mahoney has also toured the Bay Area performing the role of Cinderella with the San Francisco Opera Guild. She received a B.A. in Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance at CSU, Chico and a Master's degree in Vocal Performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Soprano Heather Rice, the most recent winner of the Symphony's Young Artist Auditions, was originally scheduled to perform but has moved out of the country. It will be presented by the Department of Music and Theatre on Dec. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Harlen Adams Theatre. Performers include the 200-voice Choral Union, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz X-Press, Brass Choir, student and faculty soloists, several chamber ensembles, various small music groups, the University Pipe Organ, as well as the Children's Choir of Chico. The audience will be invited to sing along with the performers on such seasonal favorites as "Silent Night," "Deck the Halls" and "Jingle Bells." While proceeds from the concerts benefit music students in the form of scholarships, concert coordinator, Professor David Scholz said, "The department never loses sight that Glorious Sounds of the Season! is also a way of giving back to the Chico community." Proceeds from the performances go towards scholarships for CSU, Chico students in the Department of Music and Theatre. Dunsmuir Winterfest Dunsmuir Winterfest 2012 will introduce its first Rail Jam ever as part of the season's annual celebration Dec. 7-8 at the Dunsmuir City Park. Inspired by skateboarding, snowboarders and skiers have developed a freestyle approach to riding on surfaces created out of rails, boxes, benches, concrete ledges, walls, rocks and logs. The Mt. Shasta Ski Park will be providing a snow gun bringing snow to the baseball field. Mt. Shasta Ski Park Terrain Park Supervisor Ryan Johnston is designing the Rail Jam competition and says it will be "fun for the whole family…It's for people of all ages."
