Then I accepted a challenge to spend 7 hours in silence while driving 400 miles, while fueling up and order- ing meals, all in silence. Upon arriv- ing at my mother's home, I saw they were watching a documentary about a man who lived in total silence; talk about sychronicity! That one day was such an astonishing experience for me. Later, ceremonies including si- lence became a regularity; a time for me to recharge my soul. I highly sug- gest taking time for a little bit of si- lence on a regular basis. Findinging silence and a calm space for yourself won't just improve your health—it'll help you do the best work you can. "A Quiet Place" introduces the con- cept of how powerful silence is. Folks leave pondering what life would be life without the noise of our daily lives. I hope you watch it, feel it, and question the importance of silence in your own life. "Within you there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at anytime and be yourself." ~Hermann Hesse DESERT MESSENGER Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper Proud to be a Quartzsite Licensed Business 928-916-4235 O T - E T! MAY 3 Town of Quartzsite invites every- one to attend the next meeting of Neighborhood Watch at 6:00 PM, on THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2018, at the Quartzsite Community Center. Chief William Ponce said he looks forward to working with the resi- dents to create a safer community. Launched in 1972, Neighbor- hood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their pres- ence at all times of day and night. Sponsored by the National Sher- iffs' Association (NSA), the Nation- al Crime Prevention Council says, "Neighborhood watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the coun- try, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer." For more information contact the Quartzsite Police Department at 928-927-4644. Sign seen at a San Diego trailhead: "Are you an audio litterer? Hiking for many is a time to enjoy the sounds of nature, or time for some quiet think- ing and solitude. Please: Don't share your cell phone conversation with ev- eryone within 100 feet of you! Keep your taste in music between yourself and the artist! Keep conversations quiet. Respect your fellow hikers by enjoying the sounds of silence." That advice should be heeded by all of us when in public settings. Silence became a topic for me after watching "A Quiet Place" in the the- ater last weekend. Usually I watch a movie and that's it. But, this movie has stayed with me for days, leaving me extremely aware of the everyday noise in our world. "A Quiet Place" is a smash drama/thriller based upon a family is forced to live in si- lence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound. Memories fl ooded back with my own experiences of silence over the "Silence is a source of great strength." ~ Lao Tzu
