Friends of the Library Offer Sales, Speakers and More a STAFF REPORT The Friends of the Library work to create an awareness of the opportunities offered by the libraries of Cumberland County, ocus attention on library needs and enrich the cultural advantages available to Cumberland County Citizens, to increase library services and facilities and to maintain an association of persons interested in books. To that end, they host a number of events from book sales to author visits. Several times a year the Friends hold a book sale to raise funds for the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center. The next book sale will take place on Saturday, May 8 from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. The book sale entrance is at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane, through the back door near the benches by the creek. Look for hard backs, paper backs, cds, dvds, vintage records and videos for 50 cents and magazines for 10 cents. The items for sale are a combination of library discards and community donations. Expect to see a wide variety of books available at the sale for great prices — and you don’t have to be a card holder to attend or make purchases. The sale is open to the public. It is a cash or check only event, no debit or credit cards accepted. Funds received by the Friends from dues or from special projects are used solely for library needs beyond the budget provided by Cumberland County. Proceeds from this sale will also be used to benefi t the Summer Reading Program for adults, teens and youth. On May 4 at 7 p.m. the library will welcome author Michael Malone to the Pate Room. Malone has written 10 novels, including Handling Sin, Uncivil Seasons and The Last Noel. In addition to his collection of short stories (“Red Clay, Blue Cadillac”) and two books of nonfi ction, he has written for fi lm, television and the stage. Among the many prizes he’s earned are the O. Henry, the Edgar, the Writers Guild and an Emmy (as head writer of the ABC program, One Life to Live). Malone and his wife Maureen Quilligan live in Hillsborough, N.C. Also in May, the library is inviting local authors to participate in a Local Authors Showcase that is also sponsored by The Friends of the Cumberland County public Library and Information Center. The showcase will be held on June 19 in the Pate room. This author fair will give the community a chance to meet area writers and learn more about their books. Space is limited, and authors will be registered on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. To register for a table at the event, published authors should download this application form. Applications should be mailed to: Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center, ATTN: Author Showcase, 300 Maiden Lane, Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.
