Tuesday, April 27, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Arabian Horse Show starts Friday Cinco de Mayo celebration A Cinco de Mayo Celebration is planned in Red Bluff on Saturday, May 1. Cinco de Mayo means fifth of May in Spanish and is a day for fun, food, music and dancing. Many people mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Inde- pendence Day, but it is not. Mexican Independence Day is September 16. Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico commemorating the Battle of Puebla. On May 5, 1862 a small group of Mexican soldiers defeated a formida- ble French army that was twice its size. Mexico had long before — Sept. 16, 1810 — declared its independence, but there were constant struggles to main- tain Mexico's freedom for a long time after the country became independent from Spanish rule. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the fortitude of the Mexican people. The celebration will take place 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tehama District Fairground. The event will feature tra- ditional Mexican dances such as ballet folklorico, a mariachi band, live bands, singing contest, dance contest, a dunk tank, car show, Mexican food booths selling delicious food and entertain- ment for the whole family. Many public service agencies and businesses will have informational booths and free health screening’s for the community. Event sponsors include Sierra Pacif- ic Industries, St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, Walmart Transportation and Distribution Center, Tehama County Local Child Care Planning Council and Andy Houghton Insurance.
