"Some of my friends who lived in the dorms on campus wanted to be Alpha Xis, and all of us were welcomed by the chapter," Jackie recollected. "It was a great feeling that the sorority we wanted to be a part of wanted us too!" Jackie was a fan of Epsilon events and of those hosted by the greater Greek community at the University of South Dakota. "Strollers and Swing Out were fun," she expressed, "so were the house exchanges." Her chapter sisters were everything she had desired her sisterhood to be: supportive, warm, and motivational. The backbone of strength Epsilon provided Jackie and the bonds she established with her chapter sisters were instrumental to the positive collegiate experience she had. When she first learned of Alpha Xi Delta's Coming Home: The Campaign for 214 North Plum capital campaign, Jackie knew immediately why she needed to give back. "I wanted to give because Epsilon Chapter was a big part of my college life, and it's important to me that that continues for other girls. We are sisters, and sisters help each other," said Jackie. Of course, 214 N. Plum has been a home, retreat, and a place for sisters to gather, "but the campaign itself has brought many alumnae back together because we want to be a part of this historic effort," explained Jackie. "We want to see the house through to completion!" She encourages alumnae to think of the state of the Epsilon house during their stay as undergraduates, especially those who resided there in the '70s, when the house was already in need of work. "I'm so proud that we are taking on this project," said Jackie. "No matter how much or how little you can contribute, everyone should contribute and pay it forward." Additionally, she asks that alumnae take a peek at the Epsilon online gift registry, as the house is still in need of furnishings. After teaching elementary school for a couple of years, Jackie opted to become a stay-at-home-mother to her six children with her husband, Joe, a former USD football player. Today, she enjoys living in close proximity to her 14 grandchildren, having lunch with her girlfriends, traveling, and attending USD athletic events. "We live close to Vermillion, so I get to check on the house progress when we come to town to support the Coyotes," she stated. "It's been really fun being able to see the progress of Epsilon house in- person." Jackie stays connected with several of her chapter sisters, many of whom she says have also contributed to campaign or purchased furnishings for the new house. She hopes other Alpha Xis will make an effort to help in some way too, bearing in mind the impact Epsilon made on their lives and the potential it has to influence a new era of sisters.
