Thursday, November 29, 2012 – Daily News 5B Model United Nations students give stellar performance Students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course at California State University, Chico brought home the Distinguished Delegation award from the Northwest MUN conference in Seattle. While most students went home to their families for the celebration of Thanksgiving week, 33 Chico students traveled 13 hours on a bus for the three-day conference, held Nov. 16–18. In addition to the Distinguished Delegation award, the students garnered 14 out of 30 possible individual awards. While the 33 CSU, Chico students represented a little more than 10 percent of all students attending from 17 universities, they took nearly 50 percent of all awards presented. Each of the 33 students were assigned a country to represent at the conference within six specific committees and had two to three different topics to research for their assigned country and commit- tee. The topics ranged from "The Question of Palestine" to "Access to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation" to working on a treaty to address climate change. The Distinguished Delegation award went to CSU, Chico students representing the United States, Indonesia, Ukraine, Togo, Egypt, Qatar, Sudan, Hungary, Gabon, Vietnam, Uruguay and Lebanon. In addition to the overall delegation award, Garrett Mathis, Ariana Munoz, Emily Parker, Laura Napoliello, Nigel Bocanegra-Speed, and Bert Haro received Position Paper awards for their pre-conference research. Emily Parker, Adam Graves, Bert Haro and Kristina Houchin received the Outstanding Delegate Awards; Laura Napoliello, Ali Blake, Michael Andreas and Jack Haugen received Distinguished Delegate awards for their representation of their countries. The Chico State Model Annual Economic Forecast Conference Coming in January The Center for Economic Development at California State University, Chico will hold its 13th annual Economic Forecast Conference at the Gold Country Casino in Oroville on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013. The conference has grown well beyond the original tri-county area and now serves as the leading economic forecast conference of the North State. Attendees will be coming from as far north as the Oregon border and as far south as the Central Valley region. The expanded and enhanced conference will provide attendees with information critical to successful business, community and strategic planning. The topics and breakout sessions have been designed for mutual benefit to the business and the public sector. Conference presenters and facilitators will guide a robust discussion on the current and projected national, state and local economic climate. The intent is that the discussions serve as a catalyst of regional cooperation and problem solving. Three noted economists will provide analysis on where the national, state and North Valley economies are headed in the nearand long-term future: Kevin Klowden, director and managing economist for the California Milken Institute; Professor Robert Eyler, chair of the Economics Department at Sonoma State University; and John Chiang, controller, State of California. Harry Moser of the Reshoring Institute will provide the keynote address about how Northern California can embrace the "reshoring" trend – an economic development strategy to bring manufacturing back to the North Valley. Scott Gruendl, director of Glenn County Health Services, will speak about building regional collaboration. In the afternoon, breakout sessions will address Native American economic development, manufacturing, small business regulatory reform, health care in the North Valley, work force development, technology and innovation, North Valley transportation and international trade. One of the aspects of the conference that past attendees have reported valuing highly is the chance to meet and network with others from throughout the North State. The crowd will be diverse, including representatives from businesses, utility companies, nonprofits, governments, universities and elected officials. The Gold Country Casino is located at 4020 Olive Highway, Oroville. For conference and registration information, please visit http://www.cedcal.com/welcome. This year's officers are Doug Strub as head delegate, Katelyn Phillips as secretary general, Erik Ratcliffe, Gary Boyd and Ryan Ostrom. "These student officers are the heart of the program," said Professor John Crosby, who teaches the political science course that prepares students to complete. "They are the reason for the amazing performance and Chico State's continual success. For every student recognized by the conference staff, there were several unrecognized that put forth extraordinary efforts to continue the stellar reputation of Chico State at these events. Every member of the team worked diligently and produced impressive results." The regional conference prepares students to participate in the National Model United Nations held each spring in New York, and 21 students that excelled at this conference will be chosen as Chico State's delegation to represent the nation of Iran. The MUN is a demanding program where students must excel at public speaking, indepth research, negotiation and leadership and produce a concisely written position paper. In addition, during the threeday conference, they prepare and cooperate with delegates from other schools representing different countries to produce a series of realistic UN resolutions. The Model UN program at CSU, Chico is funded primarily by the Instructionally Related Activities Program. The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences also assists in support.
