www.texaspikes.com 6 S tepping onto campus as a freshman, in a city he'd only been to once before, Mar- cus Fettinger '04 knew he need- ed to find a place he felt at home. More than that, he was looking for a place he would belong and where the members cared more about the individual than where they came from or how much money their family had. "e guys in PIKE were men of sub- stance and upstanding, down to earth and cared about one anoth- er," he said. "When you're 18 and move out of your parents' house for the first time, you're in a developmental stage and having PIKE as a home away from home, surrounded by brothers who cared, helped me stay grounded in college while developing social and leadership skills." As an undergraduate brother, Marcus served Beta Mu in multiple offices, all leading up to his term as chapter president. "Pike was and still is very important to me and I did everything in my power to make it better when I was there because I wanted to see it flourish long aer I was gone," he said. His dedication to the chapter continued as an alumnus, evident by his involvement with the chapter's alumni advisory board and the cap- ital campaign. Marcus' motivation to donate to the capital cam- paign was simple; the house would fall down without alumni support. To those who are hesitant to donate, he advises them to walk through the chapter house, take a look at the other houses on campus, and recognize that something must be done to preserve PIKE's future at UT. "PIKE has always been a special place and I remember wishing it was nicer when I was there. I have now been given an opportunity to help make that a reality and preserve the longevity of the fraternity," he said. "is is our chance to make an impact and ensure PIKE is around lon- ger than we are." Aer graduating from UT, Marcus earned his law degree from SMU and remained in Dallas. While he originally wanted to be a criminal de- fense attorney, he realized he belonged on a dif- ferent path and switched to employment litiga- tion. He considers himself lucky to have had a chapter advisor that helped develop his interest in law. He advises current brothers to work hard while they're young so they don't wake up one day wishing they would have done things differ- ently, and also, to pay their dues. Marcus lives in Dallas and can be reached at mfettinger@grayreed.com.
