THE SKULL & CROSSBONES SOCIETY MEMBERS p. 2 TEXAS ALPHA ACCOLADE S ince 2010, alumni, parents, and undergraduates have come to know two important people within the Texas Alpha community—Don and Suzanne Laidlaw. ough both were members of different Greek organizations themselves, Don and Suzanne volunteered their time to support Texas Alpha and help it become the chapter it is today. During their seven-year tenure as chairmen of SigEp Parents, the Laidlaws have assisted the chapter in numerous ways, but by far, their greatest highlight has been getting to know so many of the Texas Alpha members and their families over the years. "We have made many great friends along the way," Suzanne said. "We've especially enjoyed getting to know the young men in leadership at SigEp and the alumni who mentor them weekly. My hat goes off to these Austin alumni for giving so much of their time and talent to the development of our boys." Since 2012, the Parents Club has gifted $14,750 in 4.0 awards to 113 active members in support of the SigEp tradition of excellence in scholarship. In addition to 4.0 awards, the club has contributed over $15,000 to numerous house improvement projects. To achieve these results, the Laidlaws worked to keep an accurate and updated roster of contact information for members and their parents and have established a great communication channel with chapter officers in order to share chapter updates with parents. "As a first-time new member parent, I was starved for timely, reliable information from my freshman son," Suzanne said. "I knew if we could engage all the new member parents early on, they would be more likely to embrace the SigEp experience through all four years and promote and support Texas Alpha by attending gameday tailgates and Parents Weekends, as well as supporting the chapter's needs." The club has evolved a lot since 2010, and Suzanne has found that parents wanted to gather by class to get to know each other more intimately. Since 2011, she has recruited a volunteer to serve all four years as the communications coordinator for each new member class.
