Corey Hein Corey Hein, who is no stranger to coaching at Red Bluff High, helmed the var- sity football team for the first time this season. His goal was to put Red Bluff's program back in the playoff conversation. The team hadn't made a post- season appearance since 2004. back Anthony Dixon said Tuesday. ''Kyle and Kendall are both go-to guys in our offense. They made a lot of plays for us this year, and to see them go down on one play — man, that's crazy. We pride ourselves on being a stacked team, on being deep, and we've just got to show up this week.'' Now, Dixon likely will take on a larger role backing up Frank Gore and rookie second-round draft pick LaMichael James is expected to be active, along with top draft pick wide receiver A.J. Jenkins. An announcement on who will start Sunday at quarterback is expect- ed from coach Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday. Colin Kaepernick has won the last two games in his first two career NFL starts, while Alex Smith is now fully healthy from a concussion sustained in the first half of the last meeting with the Rams. See 49ERS, page 2B Northern Section Division II semifinals. "This is not only the most athletic team, but the best shooting team we've had as far as just pure shooters," said Spartans coach Kathy Brandt, who is in her fourth season. "So we can penetrate and kick and actually hit threes, which we haven't been able to do." That shooting ability from guards such as Chelsey Bushnell, Emily Gallagher, Daisy Brose, Maggie Hansen and Brit- tany Clatty give the team more flexibility to find 6- foot-2 freshman center Payten McKerras in the post, which, Brandt said, is the first time she's had a player that tall. What's more, she said, is that McKerras can "run like a deer" in addition to being a great shot blocker.
