Saturday, April 24, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Religion Faith&Worship Church news Missionaries return Jacob Wilhite is back from his mission in Russia. He was gone for two years and when he left he didn’t speak a word of Russian. “The first day I said hello to someone they said hello back and I didn’t understand the words,” Wil- hite said. “I learned so much. It’s made me a better person.” Wilhite returned in February. Upon returning from the beautiful mission of Mani- toba, Canada Mr. and Mrs. Smith were happily wel- comed by their friends and family. After 18 months of being in severly cold weather and preaching the gospel to every casual passerby they gained a new appreciation for what they had at home. “It’s nice to be welcomed home,” the Smiths said. “We have been here for 25 years.” The Smiths Should religion have more influence in society? • Rabbi Robert L. Tobin of Congregation Beth Shalom, Overland Park, Kan.: Religion has been part of every known society. It would be greedy to suggest that religion should have more influence in society than it has. Critics of religion (Sigmund Freud in "The Future of an Illusion," Marx and Engels in "The Communist Manifesto" or Dawkins' "The God Illusion") argued that religion is false or manipulative. One who says religion should not have more influence in society usually is accusing religion of being a farce or an evil. I do not believe that religion should have more influence on society, because it has had enormous influence already. It is for us to make that influence positive. The question is "how," not "how much." • The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Chris- tian Church, Olathe, Kan: Less. No longer can you count on scholarly consensus from the scientific community to shape our children's curriculum. Now it's a Texas textbook committee whose members draw, not from scientific method, but from Sunday School mem- ories. If you want to teach your child that the Earth is 10,000 years old and that dinosaurs left last week, fine, that's one reason private schools exist. But don't do it in a school fund- ed with taxpayer money in a country where there is a line between the religious beliefs and the state. When sacred Scriptures are presented alongside scientific method, we need less religion. And we need more. My heart sinks when I read that Christians, on average, give 1 percent of their income to charity. How does that square with Jesus' teachings, half of which concerned our money and our possessions? What can I say? White For quite a while now I have been writing these articles. Many times people have spoken to me about the content and agreed or dis- agreed with vigor. I have appreciat- ed that as it means the printed word still touches people. The question that strikes me is, "What more can I say?" For over two thousand years people have been hearing the mes- sage of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. For all of that time a small percentage of the people who heard the message have accepted it. Those who do not accept the mes- sage of salvation are either faced with the consequences of their choices as the Scriptures say or this whole faith thing is a farce and their choice was irrelevant. For those of us who hold the Bible at face value, who believe that Jesus Christ was and is the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, the Living Son of God, there is no question that we have made the only choice we could in accepting Him as our Savior. For some of us who have made this choice there is a great desire to share our faith with others so they too may make an informed choice about spiritual things. We believe that spiritual choices should not be made through the wise council of Saturday Night Live and the Evening News. Believe me when I say I could share a host of stories about what my faith has brought me, how God has intervened in my life, how believers all around me have been changed by the reforming power of God. I could tell you about the per- sons who were once people of the streets, drug addicts, alcoholics, thieves, and a long list of other things that are now living their lives to the fullest as up and com- ing citizens due to their new found faith. They would tell you if you were talking to them. The Scriptures tell us that there is power to be found in the pages of what we believe to be God’s Holy Word. Heb 4:12 GNB The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It cuts all the way through, to where soul and spirit meet, to where joints and marrow come together. It judges the desires and thoughts of the heart. I have come to respect the rights of all people to believe as they choose to but I have also seen that those who come to faith in Jesus Christ choose differently. I have seen how this new found faith changes the want-to’s of peo- ple. It’s not that they can’t do the stuff they used to do; it’s that they want to do something else – some- thing they feel their chosen Savior would be proud of instead of sad- dened by. When it seems too hard to go on they don’t give up; they give in to God and seek His strength. He never fails to meet the needs and increase the faith and strength of the person asking for help. Dan Steigman GodTalk What can I truly say about God’s choices for our lives? He has made His desires for His chil- dren clear in the very Word that the world so often makes fun of but has never read. Gal 6:7-8 GNB Do not deceive yourselves; no one makes a fool of God. You will reap exactly what you plant. (8) If you plant in the field of your natural desires, from it you will gather the har- vest of death; if you plant in the field of the Spirit, from the Spirit you will gather the har- vest of eternal life. So there it is. We will get what we want in this world and the next. We choose. We have the power of our eternity in our own hands. Each of us has the opportunity for great things or less – we have the power. What will you choose? Pastor Dan Steigman has led the believers of Believers' Church of God in Corning for many years. His ministry ranges from serving street people to the neighbors we all wish we had; he is a tireless apologist for the Lord Jesus Christ.
