HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology will continue and expand the Information is Power initiative through November 7, 2018, thanks to a generous sponsorship from Redstone Federal Credit Union. Information is Power, a collaboration between HudsonAlpha and Kailos Genetics, offers free and reduced-cost genetic cancer risk testing for men and women in North Alabama. Redstone has sponsored the initiative for two years. Free testing is available to women and men 28 to 32 years of age who live in Madison, Jackson, Limestone, Marshall and Morgan counties. If you do not fall within that age range, the test is available at a discounted price for individuals 19 and older living in those counties. ‡e test screens for mutations in the well-known BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, as well as additional genes linked to other diseases including colorectal and prostate cancer. Joseph Newberry, RFCU President and CEO, said sponsoring the initiative is a way to help build healthy and strong communities. r e d f c u.o r g | 13 ‡e new tax law, Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, eliminated a long-standing section of the tax code that allowed homeowners to borrow against their equity and use the proceeds for whatever purposes they chose, while deducting interest payments on their federal taxes.
