Factory Parts Tax season is in full swing, which means scammers are working over- time trying to take advantage of people fi ling taxes. Better Business Bureau (BBB) shares how tax scams work to help consumers stop scam- mers in their tracks. How Tax Scams Work Tax scams usually take on two forms. In one version of a tax scam, scammers call pretending to be an agent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The calls can be very convincing and often show up on caller I.D. as originating from Washington DC and begin with an offi cial-sounding recording. The scammer will claim the person on the other end of the line owes back taxes and is facing fi nes or arrest. Scammers will demand immediate payment via prepaid debit cards or wire transfers. Another tax scam involves identity theft. A scammer uses a victim's Social Security number to fi le a tax return in their name and collects the refund. The victim may not know they were scammed until they receive a written notice from the IRS, sometimes, after trying to fi le their taxes. Tips to Avoid Falling Victim to Tax Scams • File early. File taxes early before a scammer has a chance to use your information and fi le a fake return. • Know how your government works. In the United States, the IRS makes initial contact with people by mail, not email or phone calls. If you haven't received anything in the mail from the IRS, be wary of anyone who claims to be calling on their behalf. • Don't make a hasty payment. The IRS never asks for payments via prepaid debit cards or bitcoin. Also, taxpayers have the opportunity to ask questions and work with the IRS on payment plans.
