March 7, 2018 www.DesertMessenger.com 21 By Jackie Deal St. Patrick's Day Are you Irish, even a little bit? Do you like corned beef and cab- bage? Do you like a good musi- cal program? Fake the Irish and you can get the dinner and music at the Quartzsite Improvement Association(QIA) for only $15 for QIA members, $20 for non-mem- bers. Now St. Patrick's Day isn't until March 17th but you can get the above on March 14th when the QIA does an early St. Patrick's Day program. QIA membership is only $5 so you can save $5 on the dinner and buy a year's membership, how's that? The musical program afterwards is free and you can come without doing the corned beef and cabbage bit! Howard, Sandy and Friends have done several music programs recently and they always manage to recruit their friends and they put on a rea-lly good show (thank you, Ed Sullivan.) They are three exceptionally good singers and they have no dearth of talented friends. Buy your tickets ahead of time (by March 9th, please) at the QIA so they can order enough corned beef for even the marginally Irish. March 16th, 7 pm at Brenda is your last chance this year to see Bernie and Red. If your friends have been raving about them and you're feel- ing left out, get over to Brenda and enjoy their fantastic show. They Music in the desert assure us that their show will be "different" (aren't they always?) from the one enjoyed here at the QIA. Red says their "English humor is multi-layered." If that means you can enjoy it on many levels, we agree. Women generally laugh more easily, it seems, but at their recent show the men were laughing so hard it's a wonder they didn't pop their suspenders! Their music often features Red's outstanding voice though Bernie's musical abil- ity could stand on its own. "To- gether," as Bernie said, "We make beautiful music." Don't miss this, your last chance this year. assure us that their show will be assure us that their show will be Basketball season recently ended at Salome High School, and it was a growing experience for everyone involved. When Mr. McCarty, the coach of the girls' team, was asked how the end of the sea- son went he said, "The season ended on a high note with their home vic- tory against Bagdad." He also said that "With a bit more practice, the team will be lined up and ready for regionals." In his fi nal thoughts on the season he was confi dent that if the players work and practice more often over the summer, they'll be more than ready for the next season. The boys faired a little better in their season wrap up. While they lost in their fi rst round, the SHS Frogs did make it all the way to regionals and everyone here at Salome High was proud of their achievement. When asked what it was like playing his last season of basketball here at Sa- lome, senior Alexis Barraza said, "It was pretty cool. We tried to enjoy it, but mostly tried to teach the young- er kids." Along with Alexis, we are all looking forward to many more great seasons in the future. With the end of basketball comes the start of a new sporting sea- son. Softball and Baseball practice started February fi rst and they've already had a game! The Softball Coach says, "We're coming along pretty good, we've got a larger num- ber of girls than we've had in quite a few years. Our fi rst game we lost 8-3, but the girls were very enthu- siastic and never gave up! The girls are putting in a great effort, they have tons of energy and fantastic sportsmanship!" On a related note, Mr. Clough, the Baseball Coach says, "We are a promising team and we are looking forward to a fun and entertaining season!" They lost the fi rst game. Although they had very few practices to prepare for it, so with more time they will defi nitely be ready to take on the season! Track has also started up here at Sa- lome High School. Their fi rst track meets were on the 28th at Wicken- burg and the 3rd at Chandler. All the athletes have been pushing them- selves and can be heard around campus discuss- ing the intensity of their training. It's shaping up to be a promising track season. We hope to have many students advance to compete at the state level in their chosen events. The Salome High School art de- partment, in conjunction with the Centennial Public Library, put on an art show at the beginning of last month. Many students entered art- work and the friends of the library provided money for the top placed pieces. The art was judged, and voted on, by anyone in the com- munity who went and saw the show while it was on display. In the 2D art category Yesenia Martinez got 1st place, Perla Perez got 2nd place, and Ezekiel Palma got 3rd place. In the 3D art category Jazmin Ramirez got 1st place, Yesenia Martinez got 2nd place, and Jade Willett got 3rd place. Mr. Tapp the art teacher said, "It was a great show and i'm really excited about the work that the kids are making. I think it's awesome that so many people in the commu- nity got to see their talent." On a fi nal note, parent teacher con- ferences are coming up. There will be a meeting at the high school on April 14th and a second one in Quartzite on the 15th. We would love to meet all the parents of stu- dents here at Salome High School to discuss their progress this year. The art department will also be do- ing another art show in conjunction with the Quartzite meeting. Art will be on display for a few days leading up to the conference on the 15th.
