Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith DEFENSE OF MORALS CAN BE EXCUSE FOR VIOLENCE The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visitation Catholic Church: Religions can be religions of peace without their adherents always being peaceful people. Jesus' farewell gift was the gift of peace: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you." His earliest followers were against all war and violence, practicing Jesus' teaching that when slapped on one cheek, we should offer the other. Then in the early fifth century St. Augustine, who was personally a pacifist, concluded that even though individu- als could, perhaps should, be pacifists, states could not be such since they had the responsibility of protecting their cit- izens. So he began developing what we have come to know as the just war theory. Is any religion really a religion of peace? That is the foundation of my Catholic Church which has, through the centuries, sponsored such violence as the cru- sades and inquisitions. But my church also has given the world such messengers of peace as Francis of Assisi, Dorothy Day and Popes John XXIII and Paul VI. Are we a religion of peace? Yes, I think we are. But not all of us hear and live that call to be peacemakers in the same way. My trip to Philadelphia and the America for Jesus – or A4J – began with a worship service it was my priv- ilege to co-lead with Pastor Jeff Daly in his church in Middletown, Calif., the eve of Yom Kippur, September 25. We praised the Lord and begged His intervention in the Body of Christ in the USA, joined in the service by a cousin of slain American Ambassador Chris Stevens and others who know how desperately the Church itself needs a touch from God in this season. We repented as the Day of Repentance began – that is, we re-focused and re- committed our lives to God's vision and Kingdom as American Christians. We flew out to Philadelphia the next morning, observing the National Day of Repentance by turning our hearts to Him literally from one side of the country to the other. The event was held literally in the Sometimes, as with Augustine, that's because we believe that, in a sinful world, states have a moral responsibility to defend their people. Sometimes that's because, in a sinful world, we distort our religion's peace message and make other objectives, often camouflaged in twisted religious ideology, a greater priority. CIPLES The Rev. Duke Tufty, pastor, Unity Temple on the Plaza: Doctrines, creeds and dogma make up the framework for a religion, but the religion itself is the people who claim it as their own. I believe every religion, to some degree, has people who SOMETIMES FOLLOWERS STRAY FROM PRIN- any civilization throughout history. Imbeciles picket the funerals of fallen soldiers in the name of God. Excuse my name-calling; my last statement just popped out and it felt so good I decided to leave it. Not very peaceful of me, yet I claim to be a minister of a faith that represents peace. wander from the peaceful path and resort to mean, cruel and offensive measures to make their point. Discriminations, prejudices and other divisive actions fly through the air like bullets targeting those who believe differently. There have been more civil wars in Christianity than in Therein holds the point I seek to make. We are all stu- dents of life, not graduates of life. We are still learning how to be people of peace, but we stumble and fall on occasion. Our objective is to keep trying and keep progressing. A wonderful practice is to repeat the following: Peaceful mind: I am at peace with all the situations and circumstances in my life. world. Peaceful heart: I am at peace with all the people in my Peaceful spirit: I am at peace with myself and the exis- tence I am living. The clock on the building in which the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both voted and signed bonged seven times as the con- ference began Friday Evening; it would end as it began twenty-four hours later. The speakers – as might be expected – gave eloquent voice to the issues that are tearing our culture both down and apart. However – as I had hoped – they placed the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the Church. They articulated the aphorism of African Evangelist Jackson Seny- onga, "The condition of society is the report card of the Church," without using his words per se. They called upon the Church to turn away from focus on her own assets or deficits and re-focus our attention and energy on the God we serve. They said without exception that once the Church is liv- Saturday, November 24, 2012 – Daily News 7A America for Jesus 2012 — Part 1 ing the life of victory to which we are called everyone in the country will want what we have. Until that day, we have nothing of value to give, much less call others to receive. We heard Wes Campbell state that sex trafficking and sexual slavery is one of the principal scourges of the modern world. He declared, "There are more slaves alive today than in all the years of the African slave trade com- bined." He added that God does not care much whether we are active in the trade if we are not doing something dramatic to stop it and heal the wounds it inflicts on all of us. Lou Engle warned us of the sins we decry in others being pre- sent in our own camp. He said, "You cannot bind the spirit of Jezebel in the government if the spirit of Jezebel is binding the Church…Our only hope is a great repentance of the spirit of lust." He noted that the so-called spirit of Jezebel is about lusting for power as much as it is lusting for physical plea- sure. figure in the Black Church, called for America to reclaim the biblical rain- bow sign of covenant that God gave to Noah. He said the rainbow represented covenant between God and men of white, black, brown, red and yellow, and he called for the engines of busi- ness to transform the ghettoes of our land. But he also warned that the spir- it of poverty seeks deadly power of people of all economic levels. "You can be hampered by greed even if you have no money," and paralyzed by poverty even if you are rich was the Bishop Harry Jackson, a venerated message he brought. He urged us to be Christians first and Black or Hispanic and so forth a distant sec- ond. Many speakers urged an end to abortion in the Church first, and then in the land. But Pastor Jim Garlow James Wilson GodTalk may have sounded the most controversial – and crucial – note of the day when he called on pastors and leaders to find the courage to address the social issues of the day because God and His prophets have that does not want to hear it. Garlow said the greatest sin of the Church may be to retreat into the study instead of advancing into the streets with the Word of God. Truly repentant people come to know that it doesn't matter what people – even governments – think of us. It only matters that we care more about pleasing God. And the day ended with a remarkable convergence that could not be planned. The verses of Psalm 24 – with its call for righteousness in the people of God as the only objective worth pursu- ing – were read as the clock on Inde- pendence Hall chimed once for each stanza. addressed them.
