Luersen '09 YOUR GENEROSITY IS GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANK YOU D ave Samuel '94 has always said he learned more about "real life" through Beta eta Pi than he did from MIT. Pledging just two days aer visiting the Chapter, Dave happily and quickly clicked with the Beta household and, to this day, remains thankful for his fraternity experience. "MIT taught me how to solve problems; Beta taught me how to live as an adult without my parents and how to schedule and manage school work and social time," he said. "I'm thankful the stars aligned. I know my life would be very different if I wasn't a Beta." During his undergraduate years, Dave remem- bers an older brother telling him it was easier to start a soware company versus a hardware company. So, even though he graduated with an electrical engineering degree, Dave's first job was at Oracle doing soware development. In 1994, older Beta Brothers started an internet company, and aer seeing their early success, Dave knew he wanted to do the same. In 1996, he founded Spin- ner.com, the first internet radio company, which was acquired by AOL three years later for $320 million. "For those who like technol- ogy, I highly recommend a summer internship at a start- up with less than 30 employ- ees," he advises current un- dergraduates. "At these small companies, students will get to see much more about how a company operates compared to working a summer at Google or Facebook." Today, Dave is co-founder of Freestyle Capital, a seed stage venture capital firm, with more than $200 million under management and investments in over 90 companies. Before Freestyle, Dave also co-founded Crackle.com in 2004, which was acquired in 2006 by Sony Pictures Entertainment for $65 million, and has paved a path for success as a serial entrepreneur and internet pioneer. Dave visits 119 Bay State Road every few years and enjoys seeing the house in good condition. In his free time, Dave enjoys cycling, snowboarding, and kite boarding. He lives in San Francisco with his four children, ages 9-14. Dave can be reached at dsamuel@alum.mit.edu.
