The owner of this Ontario condo sought
to open up the room and add a casual
eating space; designer Martin de Sousa
had to fulfill these wishes while navigating
fixed water lines and other challenges of
multifamily remodeling.
Removing an existing wall opened up
the kitchen, while a large island added
seating. Over the new island cooktop, de
Sousa specified a low-profile hood that
required only a minimal drop in ceiling
height. A countertop trough at the rear of
the island stores cooking essentials while
creating a barrier between the cooking
area and the living room.
Separation of the sink, refrigerator, and
cooking zones make the space seem
larger, the designer says, while wall and
drywall soffits provide a finished look. A
hutch – style beverage center accommo-
dates the wine fridge and espresso
machine. Handle-less cabinetry and
distressed faux wood laminate lend a
warm contemporary vibe. —K.T.
