INSIDE PUBLISHER'S PEN I love this community but sadly, Fayetteville and Cumberland County are becoming communities of no consequence, void of ambitions, aspirations, dreams and the basic quality-of-life amenities that make life here fun, enjoyable and worth living. Adding to the problem is also a severe void of leadership by some elected officials on both the city and county levels where the interest, well being and concerns of local residents fail to take priority over their stubborn pride or selfish personal agendas. Will this ever end? The residents of this community should have had the opportunity to speak out on the $45 million plus Parks and Recreation proposal. After all, it has been in the works since 2006 and the need for such community amenities has been around longer than that. Unfortunately, a contentious city council voted six to four against that public hearing. At least for now. Let's hope our leaders can put aside their petty differences and personal agendas and start serving the people who elected them. Perhaps local media will also start asking our elected officials the tough questions to find out the real reasons behind their actions and why progress is not being made. It would be nice if we were not the only media that shared this kind of information with the community. However, the thing we do know is, these amenities are sorely needed. The time is now. And, if not now, when? We can figure out how to do this. However, the first step must be cooperation. Consequently, we remain a subdued retail community held hostage to a strong overwhelming multi-billion dollar military payroll. This does not leave much incentive for aggressive economic development, municipal cooperation or a long-range plan for creating the quality-of- life amenities that attract business and industry.
