"Desert Rose" was produced by Grammy-winning Bil VornDick with Nashville's top musicians playing on it. Tucson based, Carol plays throughout the West and regularly tours in Alaska. Many of Carol's songs tap into Western themes, including Native cul- tures, south-of-the-boarder, cowboy culture, and places in the West. Markstrom was a professor at West Virginia University, where she taught Native American studies. When she decided to pursue mu- sic full-time, she incorporated this passion into her songwriting and performances. Markstrom said, "Songwriting is just a different form of expression and a different way to tell those stories. It's the same theme, but a different medium." Markstrom also performs covers of favorite artists including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow and finds continual influence from the famous Folk. Americana and Western musicians. In addition to her music Markstrom has also written several books about Native Americans. Her children's book "Dance of the Desert" started as a song that tells the story about the moon bringing desert plants and animals alive at night.
