8A Daily News – Saturday, November 17, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Thanksgiving Courtesy photo Prof. Tom Meyer of Shasta Bible College in Redding, who has spent the last four years studying in the Holy Land is giving a special presentation open to the public at 11 a.m. on Nov. 18 at Sunrise Bible Fellowship, 956 Jackson St., in Red Bluff. Meyer will use his knowledge of earning two master's degree from Jerusalem, and his cultural insights of living with the Bedouin in the deserts of the Holy Land in his presentation from the book of Genesis. Meyer is an author on Bible archaeology, Bible memorization, and Bible Culture. More info. can be found at www.thescripturecannotbebroken.com. McConnells at Gospel Church Dwight and Heather McConnell will be at Neighborhood Full Gospel Church, corner of First and South streets, in Corning at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. Dwight and Heather coordinate Community Health Evangelism, a program that integrates evangelism and disci- pleship with disease prevention and community based devel- opment. Their responsibilities include facilitating CHE training and post training followup while using CHE principles to facilitate community development. The couples' goal is to equip believers in Christ-centered health and development ministries and assist them in planting new churches with a heart of compassion for their communities. The couple has served in Nambia and South Africa since 1984 and were in Nambia when the first case of HIV/AIDS was reported. They see this pandemic as an opportunity to spread the gospel when effective methods of reaching people are imple- mented in their time of need. Prior to missionary appointment, Dwight and Heather ministered in churches in California and Arizona. For more information call 824-2323. travelers is only days away. Families gather together for food, renewal of ties, and – hopefully – sincere gratitude for all we have been given. Whatever our issues and challenges in this season most of us have a roof over our heads and food on our table. We are not con- cerned about armed attack, plague, or the loss of our homes to fire or flood – even in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. We expect our homes to be adequately heated in winter and cooled in summer. We do not face the prospect of clearing a forest with ax and saw before planti- ng our own food and hoping it will grow enough for the coming season. The first Thanksgiving about which our traditions revolve was held in the Plymouth colony in what is now Mass- achusetts. The colonists thought they were going to the much milder climate of Virginia when they left England. They crossed an ocean in a ship as crowded as it was leaky; each person had a few square feet to call his own. They arrived in a wild land filled with strange – to them – people who might be friends or deadly enemies. They faced diseases for which they had no names and a wilderness that – while full of promise – offered no ready to occupy shelter and less food. They consigned their souls and their well being to God and set to work. When they brought in a harvest their first year, made friends with the original inhabi- tants who turned out to be generous with their own supplies and with their own techniques for living, and found the game plentiful, they invited their new friends for three days of feasting and the giving of thanks to the God who created both communities. The Massasoit people brought a number of deer to the feast – for shar- The busiest holiday of the year for ing – while the Pilgrims provided wild turkeys they had shot, plenty of fresh fish, and the crops the Natives had shown them how to grow. There were more Natives – by half – than Europeans at that first feast and they gave thanks to the same Creator wor- shipped by the Pilgrims; the Pilgrims alone under- stood that this Creator could only be fully known in the Person of His Son, but it was enough for now that they respected one another. The two commu- nities got along well because they worshipped God – He was the center of life for both groups and at all times. James Wilson GodTalk Thanksgiving was always a secular cel- ebration at its roots. They point out that the feasting seemed to be an end in itself and later became an annual event by order of the civil government. They forget that the Pilgrims, and their broth- ers the Puritans, made no differentia- tion between sacred and civil life; the same was certainly true for Native Americans of all tribes and nations. They believed so steadfastly that they would have wondered at even a discus- sion of it that only their worship and service to God as they understood Him could lead them into the paths of plen- ty for which they gave thanks. We have challenges today that they Some scholars try to prove that would not have understood, as we can hardly appreciate the position in which they found themselves in a different time on the same ground. But the God they worshipped and served – and always sought to more fully understand – is the same today and tomorrow and always. His Word – in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – calls us to be joyful, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all things. These are choices we make – to look on the great things He has done instead of raging over what He has not yet done, to seek His face instead of our own poor substitutes for Him, and to give thanks not because of what we know but because of Who He is and what He promises that never fails. Of course, if we remind ourselves to do this three-fold activity often enough it becomes a short trip to embracing another Word in Matthew 6:33 – the one that says if we seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness we will have all other things we need as well. Thanksgiving is not just Turkey Day or the Day of the Big Game – or even some generic time of appreciation for what we have. It is a time to give thanks to God – Father, Son and Spirit – who blesses us day after day and calls us home to further blessing. It should not be limited to one day, but to the first day of the rest of our lives. The Rev. James Wilson leads PrayNorthState and the California Governor's Prayer Team. He has coordinated the GodTalk feature and hosted a weekly radio program on KBLF Red Bluff, AM 1490, at 8 AM Saturdays since 2007. He has taught and ministered at many Tehama County churches, led local prayer walks, and helped launch the Carenet Pregnancy Center in Red Bluff Thanksgiving Prayer Vigil offered at St. Peter's The Red Bluff Minister- ial Association will sponsor a Thanksgiving Prayer Vigil on from 5–8 p.m. on Sunday, November 18, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. During the evening prayers will be offered for all Christian churches, their members and their mission; for the nation and all in authority; for the welfare of the world; for the concerns of the local community; for those who suffer and those in trouble; and for deceased loved ones. Prayers of thanks and praise for God's bountiful blessings will also be offered. Clergy and congrega- tional leaders of the Red Bluff Ministerial Associa- tion churches will guide the vigil. The First Christian Church and First Baptist Church will lead prayers from 5-5:50 p.m. The Vine- yard Church and North Val- ley Baptist will lead prayers from 6-6:50 p.m. The evening will conclude at 7 p.m. with a Taize Ecumeni- cal worship service led by members from the Tehama United Methodist Min- istries Cooperative Parish, Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
