T5 BY ANDREW WARREN TV Media Ruff and tumble: Every year at around this time, a group of athletes in their prime comes together for an afternoon of sport — a true celebration of the joys of phys- ical play. Oh right, and there's that whole Super Bowl thing happening, too. For the 14th year, Animal Planet presents the annual "Puppy Bowl" Sunday, Feb. 4, airing opposite that bigger- name sporting event. It's coun- terprogramming at its cutest, and this year's "Puppy Bowl XIV" is bigger than ever. A record-smashing 90 ador- able puppies take to the field this year, although chances are they won't be following the rules of football too closely. Instead, they're released into a puppy-sized mock football field with toys strewn about, while helpful humans keep a close eye on them to make sure that their play doesn't get too rambunctious. Cameras catch every tackle, tumble, sniff and lick, and "rufferee" Dan Schachner ("Four Hous- es") stays on the field with the little furballs to provide com- mentary. As in years past, all of the four-pawed participants come from shelters around the coun- try and are available for adop- tion. Also featured is "Puppy Bowl's" first-ever international participant, Mango, who's com- ing all the way from Mexico, as well as doggos rescued from ar- eas devastated by hurricanes, including Florida, Houston and Puerto Rico. Along with the highly antici- pated halftime show (which features kittens singing a hit 'N Sync single) "Puppy Bowl XIV" also features a new segment this year: the Dog Bowl. It isn't just puppies sitting in shelters waiting for forever homes, and this new event aims to show- case the older animals who are all too often passed over. It may be called Super Bowl Sunday, but there's another big game happening that after- noon. Dog lovers looking for a different sort of sport won't want to miss "Puppy Bowl XIV" Sunday, Feb. 4, on Ani- mal Planet. Super stars for 'Superstar': NBC's next live musical pro- duction has been hammering out its cast in the lead-up to its Easter premiere, and it isn't be- ing stingy when it comes to casting big names. Over the past several years, the peacock network has put on live performances of some clas- sic musicals right around Christmastime, and with the huge success of those annual events, it's perhaps not surpris- ing that the musical celebra- tions have spread to Easter. "Je- sus Christ Superstar Live in Concert" premieres live on Easter Sunday, April 1. Lined up to play Jesus Christ himself is iconic musician John Legend ("La La Land," 2016), with shock rocker and some- times-actor Alice Cooper ("Dark Shadows," 2012) cast in the role of King Herod. As for the role of Mary Mag- dalene, acclaimed singer-song- writer and Tony Award nomi- nee Sara Bareilles has been cast, and a news release made it clear that she couldn't be more excited for the opportu- nity. "To say I'm excited about this performance is the under- statement of the century," she said, adding, "this score and this musical have been a part of my life from a very young age, and it will be one of the great thrills of my life to sing these iconic songs." "Jesus Christ Superstar" de- buted on Broadway in 1971 and became an instant hit. It loosely tells the story of the last week of Jesus's life through a con- temporary lens, mostly through the point of view of Judas Iscar- iot, who has not yet been cast. "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert" is still working out its cast, but with the likes of John Legend, Alice Cooper and Sara Bareilles front and center, it's shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular. The live musical premieres Sunday, April 1, on NBC. Sheldon stays: It looks like Sheldon is staying put, and that really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's been paying at- tention to the ratings. CBS has renewed freshman comedy "Young Sheldon" for a second season, ensuring that the pre- quel series stays around for at least one more year. Of course, it's likely that its lifespan will be even longer than that. The prequel to "The Big Bang Theory" is the most watched new comedy in 18 years, with its massive number of loyal viewers making it the second-most watched comedy currently on television, behind only its parent series. Those are some impressive accomplishments. The show stars Ian Armitage ("Big Little Lies") as child genius Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons in the parent series (he also narrates each episode of the spinoff). Zoe Perry ("Scandal") and Lance Barber ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") star as Sheldon's parents, with Raegan Revord ("Modern Family") and newcomer Montana Jordan playing his siblings. It's a hard world out there for a child genius, but appar- ently not for a TV show about one. The first season of "Young Sheldon" is currently airing on CBS.
