Communies of Springs, so named because Indian Creek originated from Stella from a group of natural clear-water springs. e town is located in Newton County with part of an old 8,000-acre homestead of the first known settler of the community reaching into McDonald County to the south to what is now Owsley Cemetery and Union Church. Moses Eagle purchased the old homestead and in 1900 named the post office aer his granddaughter, Stella Eagle. Stella was the home of Cardwell Memorial Hospital, opened about 1920 by the late Dr. C.C. Cardwell; it closed in the 1980s. Today the town has a small retail base, has a senior center and an active historical society and is home to Triway Elementary School, where some McDonald County youth attend classes. Tiff City Tiff City is located 18 miles northwest of the county seat of Pineville on the Oklahoma line on Buffalo Creek, which was adjacent to Indian Territory in its early days. Retail trade with Seneca Indian neighbors thrived. e first post office was built in 1876, and in 1881, the city boasted several retail businesses. Today, the community has some retail businesses, a community club and 4-H Club and its own volunteer fire department. Each year the town hosts a turkey dinner to raise funds for the upkeep of its community center. Bethpage e community building in Bethpage is humming most of the time with one event or another. About 90 years ago, there were no highways or bridges through the area; horse and buggy was the main means of transportation and chivarees were popular for the just married. e Bethpage school was known as the Williams School. e boys outhouse was on one hillside, the girls on the other. Drinking water came from a wooden bucket pulled from an old dug well. In wintertime, church services were held at the schoolhouse. In downtown Bethpage, there was a general store, a barber shop, a log house post office and a blacksmith shop. ere was a lot of Civil War activity in the area. Bunker Hill Bunker Hill evolved around a one-room school house before the turn of the century in the area that is now at the junction of Highway 76 and Route W. e buildings, the first one a log cabin, were destroyed by fire several times. In the late 1920s the present Bunker Hill School was completed and classes were held there until the late 1940s, when consolidation caused a change. Businesses had been established and became the focal point for many activities, including operation of a store where the "spit and whittle" group hung out. Strawberries became the crop of choice before World War I when many acres of strawberries were planted. e berries were picked and hauled to Anderson for shipment. e old school building has served the Bunker Hill Community Club since the early 1950s, with many activities held there each year.
