Dining Out Down to the river By Starr Oldorff Above | Jennifer Collier and Michael Boose sit at the bar at Locks Creek, a popular after-work watering hole. Top and Bottom | After drinks, stay for supper. The restaurant and oyster bar specializes in mouthwatering seafood. Long before the restaurants, amphitheater or even the legendary Breece’s Landing, Campbellton was a hub of life on the Cape Fear River. For generations, the settlement has been the link to transportation, sustenance and survival. And these days, home to one of the best seafood houses in Fayetteville. But it’s easy to see why investor Kevin Summers sees Locks Creek Seafood and Oyster Bar as one piece of a larger puzzle. He pictures Campbellton Landing as a national destination for dining, shopping, river sports and entertainment. Already, the Sol Rose Amphitheater brings a crowd for the Cape Fear Regional Theater’s annual river show plus concerts, festivals and this summer, movies under the stars. Fishermen aplenty can be seen backing boats into the river’s dark waters at the nearby ramp after stocking up on supplies at the Riverside Sports Center. And up on the hill, Locks Creek has been drawing locals in droves. 30|August/September • 2009
