Local Business age F A new By Dr. Lenny Salzberg or 19 years, Dr. Gerianne Geszler made a successful career as an obstetrician/ gynecologist at one of Fayet tevi l le’s largest practices. But her patients often had questions for which Geszler did not have answers. Tradit ional medicine no longer felt fulfilling. And one question in particular nagged: Why aren’t people living longer, healthier lives? So Geszler made the decision after nearly 20 years, not to mention scores of newborns, to start over. She prepared for the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine certification exams and, earlier this year, opened the Center of Health and Restoration in association with Breezewood Family Healthcare. Her new field is not without its critics and controversy. And a solo practice comes with its share of pitfalls. But Geszler feels strongly that mainstream health care has its priorities reversed. “We’re not looking at things from the right perspective,” she said. “We’re looking at symptoms instead of trying to find the cause. I call it ‘sickness’ care; we have a Band-Aid approach to medicine. It is the way that we’ve been trained, and to me it is not fulfilling. It’s not why I went into medicine. I went into medicine to help people.” 36|August/September • 2009
