THE CHIMES CHAPTER ETERNAL Robert W. Christenson '50 E-446 entered Chapter Eternal on March 6, 2017, after a life full of volunteering, woodworking, traveling, playing tennis and golf, and enjoying the outdoors. During his career he was on the engineering development team that introduced Kimbies Diapers, which became the product now called Huggies. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and their three children. Gerald Schmelzer '53 E-524 entered Chapter Eternal on March 11, 2017, as a resident of Coronado, Calif. He practiced law in San Diego until he retired in 1986. Gerald spent his retirement on the golf course and traveling the world with his wife, Barbara. He leaves behind his wife, daughter, son, and eight grandchildren. Jerry P. Shafer '62 E-662 entered Chapter Eternal on March 14, 2016, as a resident of Denver, Colo. Jerry joined the United States Navy and served one tour on the USS Coral Sea, one tour on the USS Forrestal in Vietnam, and also attended Naval Justice Training. For his heroic efforts, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star, as well as many other commendations. After leaving the Navy, Jerry worked for McDonnell Douglas on the unmanned orbital satellite program. He was a commercial pilot with Continental Airlines for 37 years. With his wife, Cheryl, he traveled the world and lived in Colorado, Hawaii, Texas, Iowa, and California. They lived on their sailboat in Hawaii and spent two years traveling the United States in their RV. Jerry loved life and enjoyed sharing that love with his family and friends. ALUMNI UPDATE Mark Reis '78 E-1247 began his tenure with the Colorado Springs Gazette in 1986. In June, the paper announced in a touching tribute (http://gazette. com/mark-reis-did-his-job.-beautifully.-sensitively.-collaboratively.- memorably./article/1605276) that the award-winning photographer would be leaving to pursue other ambitions. From photographing 11 Olympic Games to five Super Bowls, Mark was a valued member of the Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom. Mark's resume touts many awards, including the Olympic Media Association Gold Prize and the Regional Photographer of the Year from the National Press Photographers Association. He resides in Colorado Springs. Mark Lenson '87 E-1531 is a surgical specialist for Johnson & Johnson. He lives in Overland Park, Kan., and has two daughters, Katherine and Lauren.
