16 www.DesertMessenger.com January 17, 2018 By Jackie Deal There's music in the desert. In the next couple of months more mu- sic than you can possibly attend. If you're starving for music then you've come to the right place. So many different kinds of music that we can only begin to skim over them. But let's try. Hardshell Harmony is a Blue- grass group. The only Bluegrass group whose business card I kept! Does that mean I liked them? You bet! They're appearing 7 p.m. January 23 at the Quartzsite Im- provement Assoc. (QIA.) Even if you think you don't like Bluegrass, come out and hear them. They may surprise you. The Young Kidz, Joe and Carol Young, are appearing January 30 at the QIA. Carol says "We play a variety of music; music that pleases everybody." Joe adds, "We're not politicians!" Last year they played Music in the desert through the Midwest from Chicago down through the south to Palm Springs area, playing at RV resorts, lounges etc. And yes, some of you may have heard them last year here in Quartzsite. Joe has played and sung "his entire life", starting as a fi ve year old. They were married and Carol started playing and sing- ing with him fi ve years ago. Barbara Fairchild, as the trite saying goes, needs no introduction. Her affi liation with Quartzsite ex- tends back a few years when she had a tent here and wowed us with her lovely music .She's only going to be here February 3rd, 7p.m. so don't miss it. She's known for her "Ted- dy Bear" song but she has far more than that to offer. Laughing Bird, Janey and Tupelo Kenyon, are appearing here Feb.6th, 7 p.m. at the QIA and also Jan 17th at Brenda's Desert Gold RV Park. Forty years ago two young people in their 20s went to Kodiak, Alaska looking for adventure (sound famil- iar?) They found each other and the duo, "Laughing Bird" was formed. The name, however, came from a year and a half sojourn in Central America where everywhere they played a trop- ical bird, the Laughing Falcon, joined in. As they said, "Everyone's a critic." They say they've driven the Alaska Highway ten or twelve times. And where are they going next? "Down the road, around the bend (not over the hill) and around the world." Come hear them before they take off around the world. BRENDA BAND SCRAMBLE The Band Scramble has proven so popular that it's being repeated twice this year. The Quartzsite Improve- ment Assoc. (QIA) Scramble was a success and Feb 3rd it will again be staged, this time at Brenda's Desert Gold RV Park. Musicians sign in be- tween 4:30 and 5:30; everyone pays $5.00, musicians and audience; that's where the cash prize money comes from. After musicians check in, their names are put in a container ac- cording to the instrument they play. There are 6 categories: keyboards, harmonicas, accordion; fi ddles; banjo, dobro, mandolin; bass, drums; rhythm guitars; lead guitars. Last year at Brenda they formed six bands with six members each. The hope is for more this year. You must play an instrument. Conra Marsh who's in charge of the Scramble cautions: no singers only. Newly formed bands are sent off stage and in 15 minutes they must re- hearse and prepare. Meantime four judges, picked from the audience are given checklists: so many points for each of six criteria. We're as- sured that Aunt Minnie and Ethel, the Cleaning Lady, will help polish things up, including but not limited to, men's bald pates! Don't worry, the cleaning lady is out of rehab' this year - Again! "Tiny Tim" may also visit. "Little Girls in the Backseat" may be performed and some good ole' hillbilly music. I've heard musi- cians say: "Boy, I'm not going to miss it this time." Be sure you don't! MORE MUSIC AT GOLD STAR AND BRENDA GOLD Debbie and Galen Guthrie (related to Woodie and Arlo Guth- rie, sound familiar?) of Gold Star RV Resort bring big name music to Quartzsite and Brenda through their "relative" connection. January 20 at Quartzsite's Gold Star RV Resort and Jan. 21 at Bren- da's Desert Gold RV Resort, they will present Jimmie Jack Whita- ker, winner of more awards than we have room for: singer, musician, entertainer of the year and an award for his foundation that helps young people get musical instruments. Mikki Daniel is appearing Janu- ary 26 at Desert Gold RV Resort in Brenda and January 27th at Gold Star RV Resort in Quartzsite. Mikki is the Western Female Entertainer of the year. Young, pretty and lively western swing, sounds enticing? Come and fi nd out! All shows are at 7 p.m. unless oth- erwise noted. www.DesertMessenger.com www.DesertMessenger.com
