The Missouri Alumni of DU 104 East Broadway Columbia, MO 65203 Address Service Requested Duck call The Chapter Eternal Tom Eblen '58 entered Chapter Eternal on June 10, 2017. Tom's career spanned six decades, including news leadership roles at the Kansas City Star and Fort Scott (Kan.) Tribune before joining the University Daily Kansan as general manager and news advisor to hundreds of students at the University of Kansas. Tom retired from KU in 2001 and became an editorial consultant for the Kansas Press Association. He con- ducted dozens of onsite tune-up workshops for Kansas newspapers, in addition to seminar and speaking en- gagements across the United States. In 2007, Tom won the Clyde M. Reed Jr. Master Editor Award, recogniz- ing a lifetime of achievement in Kansas journalism. He was named to the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2010. Tom was a lifetime member of both MU and KU Alumni Associations and served on the board of directors for both. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie, whom he met while working at the Star; their children, Matt and Courtney; and two granddaughters. James K. Hoel '65 entered Chapter Eternal on May 4, 2017. Jim began working at a very young age and was never afraid of hard work. Most of his career was spent in the field of information technology, retiring from Haldex of Blue Springs, Mo., in 2001. Jim mar- ried Ruth Ann Steele on December 7, 1967, and they have two sons, David and Stephen. He loved spending time with his boys and working with them on projects. On May 25, 1979, Jim married Marie Annette Rob- erts and shared a wonderful 37 years together. They enjoyed traveling, life at the lake, and spoiling their many dogs. Jim was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs. Alumni News Bruce Colbert '53 and his wife, Jean, make their home in Riverside, Calif. Bruce was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 1953. He retired as a colonel in 1980. From 1985 to 1995, he worked for Northrop Grumman. In 2012, Jean suffered a severe stroke and Bruce has been her full-time caretaker since then. E-mail: arthur-colbert@sbcglobal.net Harry Bodine Jr. '54 spent much of his career as a writer and editor for The Oregonian in Portland, Ore., specializing in politics, government, and the Oregon and Washington legislatures. Harry interviewed five U.S. presidents: Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and George H.W. Bush. He has been retired since 1998. He has served on numerous boards, and now in retirement he enjoys teaching teenagers to drive and introducing them to golf. Don Irish '57 is a retired medical administrator living in Las Vegas, Nev. He recently completed a quest to memorialize an artifact of his family tree. A World War may say that we are a company that just sells products, but I believe we serve a far greater pur- pose. I believe the same could be said about Del- ta Upsilon's mission of being the premier men's fraternity committed to Building Better Men for a global society through service, leadership de- velopment, and lifelong personal growth of our diverse membership. "I still enjoy reflecting on cherished memories of ball games, beach parties, and campus town races. While those memories may fade over time, the pride I have in being a DU and the life lessons I learned will remain in sharp focus for a lifetime." Steve and his wife, Becky, have a 10-year-old daughter, Peyton Brooke. The family lives in Brentwood, Tennessee. He is a member of the Florida and Arizona state bar as- sociations, and he has been a certified specialist in work- ers' compensation law by the state bar of Arizona since 1979. E-mail: mizzouj@optonline.net Robert Meller '68 is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. In 2015, he was inducted into the Air Command Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Barrie, have five children and live in Shalimar, Fla. E-mail: sgoose42@cox.net Bruce McKinney '74 began his term as president of the Mizzou Alumni Association on July 1. Bruce's career took him first to Marathon Oil in Houston, then to Kansas City at Marion Merrell Dow (now Sanofi-Aventis), to Hallmark Cards Inc., and finally the Com- munity Blood Center of Greater Kansas City, where he recently retired as vice president and chief financial officer. As an alumnus, McKinney has served on the MAA Gov- erning Board and the Intercollegiate Athletics Com- mittee. And now, as MAA president, the Overland Park, Kan., resident wants to help MAA chapters en- gage with a broader set of alumni through career net- working and chapter-based community volunteerism. He'll also listen to alumni concerns and advocate for them in a way that builds credibility with other alumni and MU's administration. E-mail: ebmckin@aol.com David Novak '74 and his wife, Wendy, committed $21.6 million to the University of Missouri School of Journalism to establish the Novak Leadership Institute. David's vision for the Lead- ership Institute stems from his peo- ple-first approach to leadership edu- cation. During his 15 years as chair- man and CEO of Yum! Brands, the world's largest res- taurant company, David shaped the strategic direction for Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut. He developed his trusted Taking People with You leadership program that he personally taught to thousands of managers around the world. Many of his ideas are rooted in the strategic principles of advertising and marketing, which laid the groundwork for his leadership career. David resides in Louisville, Ky. Scott Robirds '77 retired as vice president of regu- latory and clinical affairs for C.R. Bard in Decem- ber. Scott lives in Salem, S.C., with his wife, Susan. E-mail: tony_maher10@yahoo.com Danny Collins '06 received the 2017 Mizzou G.O.L.D. award, an honor from the alumni association that recognizes outstanding volunteer service of alumni. Danny was a very active and impactful student leader during his time at Miz- zou and has continued to share his time and talent with Mizzou through the Rocky Mountain Tigers Alumni Chapter. During his time as alumni chapter president, Danny led the chapter to continued Capstone recognition and expanded the organization's reach and impact, including events and service oppor- tunities that significantly widened the reach and im- pact of the chapter. Danny's leadership also facilitated significant investment and growth in the chapter's scholarship endowment. Danny lives in Denver and serves as a supervisor in risk advisory at McGladrey LLP.
