Hair, Nails, and Pedicure Services By Jackie Deal Coming to the Desert Sky Theater: PETER ,PAUL AND MARY Never heard of McDougal Street West? How about "Peter, Paul and Mary"? McDougal Street West are tribute artists who are helping to keep Peter, Paul and Mary's music alive. They're from Prescott, Arizo- na and January 6th at 7pm they'll recreate the magic of this group at The Desert Sky Theater- for you oldies that's the fancy new name for the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA.) Mary Alberts (Mary of course) says she "always wanted to sing." When she was four years old she decided that a talent scout would discover her. That didn't happen. So at age six she'd climb atop a fi re hydrant and sing to the cars stopped at the intersection. Years later at the Post Offi ce in Prescott she caught the at- Music in the desert tention of Ron Skelton (Paul) who thought, "If I ever had a Peter, Paul and Mary trio she'd be my Mary…I wonder if she can sing?" Rick Shore (Peter) came to an early concert of theirs and decided not to start his own Peter, Paul and Mary trio since there was already a good one. A year later he joined them and together they've sung in Laughlin, Tucson, where they sold out the Gas Light Theater, and at RV resorts. They appeared in Brenda a few months ago and Sandy Andreasen was so impressed with them she talked to them after the show and invited them to Quartzsite. Mary said, "If it's anything like Brenda, this is our audience." Check them out on their website: macdougalstreetwest.com DOLAN ELLIS, ARIZONA'S OFFICIAL STATE BALADEER Dolan Ellis has been appointed Arizona Offi cial State Balladeer by thirteen consecutive governors. That adds up to fi fty two years! He's written more than 300 songs and performed them throughout the U.S. and in twenty foreign coun- tries. He says he's always sung and written music, mostly about Arizo- na. "Music is my calling, and Arizo- na has always been calling me." He and Marilee go camping in a Class C motor home, "so we can get into any National Park." He was part of the original New Christy Minstrels when they were regulars on "The Andy Williams Show" (remember that, folks?) He played with them occasionally until about three years ago. He plays a 12 string guitar, writes and arranges songs. He also pioneered the use of large-screen photography to illus- trate his songs. His shows feature humor, storytelling and a multi- media presentation to entertain his audience. At the height of his career he says he played about 1,000 shows in one year! Now he's reduced that to "35 gigs a year." When will he re- tire? He laughs and says, "I'll prob- ably be in mid-song when I go, at least I hope I'll be in mid-song." He writes and sings about the country that we love as only some- one who truly loves it could. Come to the Quartzsite Improvement As- soc.
