6 MU NEWS Personal and Career Development O ver the summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to work under a Mu alumna at Roche Molecular Diagnostics within the Cervical Cancer Solutions Lifecycle. As a product communications intern, I was responsible for helping develop communications and marketing content (the main one being a visual and educational campaign for Cervical Health Awareness Month, planned for January 2018), planning events for international gynecologic healthcare congresses, presenting at weekly meetings, and, above all, advocating for and learning about how to enable women to live their best lives through adequate knowledge and access to healthcare. Every day, I was learning something new, whether it was about business strategy, collaborating with colleagues around the world, or reading new research on cervical disease. It was truly a dream to be able to work in the women's health space because being at work allowed me to give back to the women who are our sisters, moms, aunts, and friends. As a woman in the healthcare field, it is important to me that I am aware and participating in the acute health burdens that affect women directly. The clear passion from my boss and mentor, as well as the entire team at Roche, assured me that it is with compassion and diligent effort that we move forward in solving the problems that exist around us. While I was sad to leave at the end of the summer, I gained a transformative experience in biotechnology, women's health, and communications that I would not have gained elsewhere. Mu Chapter House Corporation Board Annual Awards O n October 23, the Mu chapter house corporation had the pleasure of presenting its annual awards, which we look forward to every fall. The award recipients are selected by a panel consisting of one individual from each initiated class chosen by her Mu sisters, several of the executive officers, and some of the chapter advisors. Each award is represented by a lovely permanent trophy, which resides in the trophy cases in the Fern Room at the Mu chapter house. The winner's name and the award year are engraved on each trophy, and each winner receives a commemorative gift to remind her of the honor bestowed on her by the chapter. Given the wealth of intelligent, talented, and dedicated Chi Omegas from which to choose, it's always a challenge to select only a few chapter members to recognize. After careful deliberation on the part of the panel, five outstanding Mu women where chosen to be honored. Molly McNeely '15 was the winner of the Ada Caldwell Tallman Memorial Award. Presented by Janet Leong Belton '90, this award has been given since 1964 to an active senior who has rendered sincere and devoted service to her fraternity and who exemplifies the qualities shown by Ada Caldwell Tallman, an extraordinary Chi Omega initiated in 1914. Dee Hawk Pearce '63 presented Alexandra Origenes '15 with the Margaret "Sis" Collins UC Campus Service Award, which recognizes that member of Mu chapter who most exhibits loyalty to the fraternity and commitment to participation, leadership, and service to the UC Berkeley campus and its extended community. Samantha Rubenstein '17 was awarded the Carolyn "Dee" Pearce Recruitment Spirit Award. Presented by Marva Sheehan '77, this award honors an active member who has contributed to the strength of Mu chapter by encouraging the pledging of members who represent the great purposes of Chi Omega, and who best exemplifies throughout recruitment, the highest standards taught to the chapter by Mu's own Dee Pearce. Elizabeth Stevens Adams '70 presented Hayleigh Shobar '16 with the Margaret P. Conant Award. The recipient of this award has displayed outstanding scholarship, and quality service to the chapter as well as to the UC Berkeley campus at large. Alexandra Wilson '17 was the winner of the Vonnie Dondero True Mu Award. Presented by Stephanie Linman '10, the award honors the active member who, like alumna Vonnie Marsh Dondero '49, best exemplifies the qualities of loyalty and dedication, and is so finely tuned into Mu chapter that she anticipates needs and then meets them. The house corporation would like to extend our congratulations to each of these capable and committed women. Mu chapter is fortunate to have such terrific sisters!
