ΣΦΕ EARTBEA H T UNIVERSITY OF OREGON s SIGMA PHI EPSILON Oregon Beta FALL 2017 OREGON BETA ELECTS NEW ALUMNI AND VOLUNTEER CORPORATION OFFICERS An Exciting Time for the SigEp Brotherhood B ack in the summer of 2016, I drove up to the home of Dick Allen '58 on a very hot Saturday afternoon. He and I enjoyed a glass of iced tea and chatted for a couple hours about his days working for the fraternity, the University of Oregon, the Ducks football team, and, most importantly, how we were going to find alumni volunteers for Oregon Beta. Dick had not worked with the Chapter or its alumni for several years, and I had only moved to Oregon two years earlier. Although we did not know how or if any progress was going to be made, we both agreed we would do our part and try our best to help build a new Alumni and Volunteer Corporation (AVC) for Oregon Beta. Approximately one year later in August, I again drove up to Dick's house with a variety of refreshments I had picked up at the Fred Meyer's down the road. This time, instead of it being just the two of us, there were six additional SigEp alumni in the room. We were there to meet with the SigEp National Housing to learn more about the management of the Oregon Beta property and Chapter house. There was 90 minutes of discussion about budgeting practices, long-term structure improvements and maintenance schedules, and, perhaps most importantly, the responsibilities of the local AVC. Clearly, the stage was set for a new group of alumni volunteers to lead the Chapter. By the end of the evening, we had elected Todd Ruberg '82 as president and the seeds for a new Oregon Beta AVC had been planted. It should certainly be noted that none of this could have happened without the help of many alumni, but especially, Brian Stewart '82 and Mark McGonegal '88, who were instrumental in identifying and recruiting key alumni volunteers to serve the Chapter. The first official meeting of the new AVC was held on the University of Oregon campus, Sunday morning, October 1, in a Straub Hall classroom just prior to the undergraduates' Balanced Man Scholarship luncheon. Following our hour-long meeting, we joined the undergraduates for the scholarship presentations, and Todd served as the keynote speaker for the event. Before closing remarks, there was one surprise in store. Pat Latimer '68 was recognized for his many, many years of selfless service to the Fraternity with SigEp's Volunteer Excellence Award, an outstanding honor for a very deserving brother. This is an extremely exciting time for the brotherhood of Oregon Beta. Now that we have a group of alumni organized, the Oregon Beta AVC plans to have six meetings every year. We will be meeting in Eugene once an academic quarter for face-to-face time with the undergraduate executive board and other Chapter leaders, and we will meet an additional three times a year in Portland. All alumni are welcome to join us for these meetings, so just shoot Todd or me an e-mail, and we can get you on an e-mail list for alumni and Chapter announcements.
