The days may be getting shorter, but that doesn't mean that the nights are any darker — especially not with all the Christmas lights going up in neighborhoods across the country. Of course, while some folks are content with just a sin- gle string of monocolored LEDs, other families go all out with dis- plays impressive enough to be jaw-dropping. It's the latter sort of holiday decorators that ABC's "The Great Christmas Light Fight" is interested in, and for a fifth year, the annual competition series is pitting the best of the best light- stringers against one another. Premiering Monday, Dec. 4, the new season airs back-to-back episodes every Monday evening from now until the week before Christmas. Each episode of "The Great Christmas Light Fight" shows off four of the most over-the-top Christmas light displays that families from across America have put together to help cele- brate the season. "Trading Spac- es'" Carter Oosterhouse and fre- quent "Rachael Ray" guest Tani- ya Nayak both return for a third year to judge the competition. In each episode, once all four displays have been showcased, Oosterhouse and Nayak get to judging. The pair evaluates each display in a variety of categories, including just how much Christ- mas spirit has been included, and rewards the winner with the coveted Light Fight trophy. But of course, that's not all: the win- ners also get a huge $50,000 prize — merry Christmas, in- deed! This season also features an extra holiday surprise: neigh- bors! In one episode, next-door neighbors team up to build a double-sized display that they hope will beat other neighbor- ing pairs doing the same. There are more bulbs than ever before when this year's "Great Christmas Light Fight" premieres Monday, Dec. 4, on ABC. Anniversary antics: Five de- cades ago, a little variety show popped up on the CBS schedule that would go on to achieve 11 laughter-packed seasons and be- come a cultural phenomenon. It was "The Carol Burnett Show," and CBS is celebrating the anni- versary of the groundbreaking series with "The Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special" on Sunday, Dec. 3. The special two-hour event was filmed at the series' original soundstage in Los Angeles, and reunites much of the team from the classic show. Burnett ("Mad About You") welcomes back original cast members Lyle Wag- goner ("Wonder Woman"), Vicki Lawrence ("Great News") and iconic costume designer Bob Mackie, along with a huge number of special guests whose own sketch comedy was influ- enced by the legendary series. Comedy heavyweights Ste- phen Colbert ("The Late Show with Stephen Colbert"), Bill Hader ("Saturday Night Live"), Jay Leno ("The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"), Martin Short ("Mars Attacks!," 1996) and Maya Rudolph ("Bridesmaids," 2011) are just a few of the big names slated to appear, along with actors Jane Lynch ("Glee"), Bernadette Peters ("The Good Fight") and Kristin Chenoweth ("Bewitched," 2005). For folks who may not re- member a series that went off the air four decades ago, "The Carol Burnett Show" may not seem like such a big deal, but it was a sketch comedy heavy- weight in its heyday. Its combi- nation of music, dancing and sketches enraptured a genera- tion of TV audiences, and it was Burnett's hilarious characters and spot-on comedic timing that really made the show what it was. "I can't believe how fast the time went, and what makes me the happiest is that so much of the funny stuff we did still holds up today, and we can share it with generations to come," Bur- nett said in a statement an- nouncing the special. And she's right — a lot of the humor still holds up after all these years, and it's being celebrated in "The Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special" Sunday, Dec. 3, on ABC. Cops and authors: Nathan Fillion is sticking with ABC. The long-running dramedy "Castle," in which he played the titular bestselling novelist who solved real-life crimes, was suddenly cancelled by the network in 2016, but the actor has landed a straight-to-series order for a new drama. "The Rookie" is inspired by a true story, and stars Fillion as a middle-aged man who upends his cozy small-town life to pur- sue his dream of being a big-city cop. Now a rookie in the LAPD, he's surrounded by other newly minted police officers 20 years his junior, making him an "old" man in a young person's world. The drama also reunites Fil- lion with "Castle" showrunner Alexi Hawley, who is writing and producing the new series, with Fillion also serving as an executive producer. Although nowadays he's best known for his starring role in "Castle," the Canadian-born and raised Fillion first rose to promi- nence for his role in the soap op- era "One Life to Live," for which he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award. His leading role in the science fiction series "Firefly" earned him a devoted fan base, which his time starring in "Castle" only bolstered. "The Rookie" is still in early production, with no release date or episode count announced yet.
