Who, or what, makes the sounds coming from the alien played by James Arness in the 1951 release of "The Thing From Another World"? A: I'm sorry to say your last hope was misplaced. I can't help you. It's a great question, though, partly because most people are more interested in "The Thing From Another World's" visual effects, which were ground- breaking at the time. It seems as though the movie nerds who are obsessed with this now-classic proto-horror film were too busy researching those, and didn't bother looking into the movie's sound effects. The scene that gets the most attention is the fire scene, when the monster bursts into the room where the film's pro- tagonists (soldiers and scien- tists at a remote Arctic re- search base) are hiding. It's re- garded by most as the first "full-body burn" on screen — that is, the first time a stunt person is completely soaked in gasoline and lit on fire. It's a technique that has been reused many times since, in horror films and elsewhere. Because of that, most cite this as the film's most memo- rable scene, but it's also the one where the monster's strange voice is most promi- nent.
