The morning was dark and the drops were heard tapping away on the roof. There was a little odor of refreshing moist smell. A bit of refreshing air brought the beginning of the fall season. October has hosted us to the first This column will be a potpourri of thoughts, random thoughts and perhaps even thoughtful thoughts. It is time for the Western Open Fid- dle Championships again in Tehama County. The treasured event takes place at the Tehama County Fairgrounds from Oct. 25- 27. It is a wonderful event with contestants from three years of age to possibly ninety three years of age. The music truly restores the soul for many of us. The delight on the faces of the participants reas- sures us that there are many pleas- ant things in life. with voters counting down and studying in order to make their selections. I usually abstain from doing any specific political advis- ing in this column. I am trying to keep from doing so this year too. It has been interesting for me to watch the debates for the presiden- cy on television and yes I will make a selection. Will I make my selection pub- lic? Not likely, however I assure readers that I have given the matter many hours of thought. Every one of us is called to take the election of officials seriously, to make every effort to choose those who will do It is not long until Election Day the most to keep our country, a democracy. We do not have to be afraid to vote in a country where we can listen to the candidate's opinions and are privileged to make our choices freely. In reality we must remember that we live in a free country with free elec- tions, where the air smells rain fresh, where fiddlers fiddle and drummers drum. No, not every day or every week or even every year is so rewarding. We have had our troubles in growing with this country, its ups and downs mingled with the joys. I have heard people speak of the "great depression" and it seemed to me that it was the most trying times for this nation. I was born to parents who lived through the depression but I did not ask them to share enough with me about it. I know that this year has been trying for many who have not been able to find employment. Our first rainy day of the year has caused me to make soup. It usually warms due to the lowered temperature of entry to the fall days. The coolness of today has me running a small heater in my office room. I have a feeling that I will not need it as I look around and see that the rest of my day will be re¬ organizing a lot of clutter. Yeh, I will probably throw away some no longer needed scraps of paper and other overwhelming items often called "junk." Oh, yes since this is a potpourri type of column that is a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I will remind readers of the Kirkin 'o' the Tartan that will take place Sunday at 11 a.m, at the Presbyterian Church located at 838 Jefferson St. in Red Bluff. The annual Refor- mation Sunday is defi- nitely well worth a visit. Don't forget to vote, the Carolyn Barber right following words are excerpts from a poem written by Edgar A. Guest. Patriotism my throat, I think my country needs my vote, I know it doesn't need My lungs and larynx, too; And so I sit at home at night And teach my children what is ours, And wise for them to do; And when I'm on the job by day I do my best to earn my pay. ...I love this splendid land of flowers through. I never stand upon a box To say we 're headed for the rocks... Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
