Berrendos becomes a GEAR UP school Berrendos Middle School has been accepted as a California GEAR UP School. The process began last year with the writing of the grant and participation in the Plan- ning Phase Workshop that took place in Berkeley. In all, 166 schools applied and only 48 were accept- ed. "We are so excited to be a part of this amazing program," says Stacy Pearce, Berrendos Middle School teacher and GEAR UP site contact. The California GEAR UP program was enacted as part of the 1998 Higher Education Act to give more low-income stu- dents the skills, encour- agement, and preparation to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Grants have been awarded to 46 states and four terri- tories. Program services are specifically designed to support the middle school reform effort in each State. GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Under- graduate Programs. "This program blends perfectly with our Expect More Berrendos program already in place," Pearce said. In September, all eighth-graders participat- ed in a leadership confer- ence, held at Carlino's Event Center at Rollings Hills that highlighted the importance of higher edu- cation. By listening to keynote speakers and activity-based break-out sessions, they gained a greater awareness of the high school's A-G stan- dards, setting goals and plans, and learning more about the ins-and-outs of college life. they blew out a candle and said one of their goals instead of a wish. Gerber School has jumped on board with the community to help promote breast cancer awareness through Think Pink Day, which was Thursday, October 18 in Northern California. Staff and students got involved by wearing pink to school, sporting pink ribbons and bracelets, and a few classes even spray painted their hair pink! The school had fun showing our school pride while supporting a very important cause. The idea to have a Think Pink spirit day was generated by the 4-8 grade students during a Student Council meeting. The school hopes to make it a yearly event. Retailer donates to teachers' expenses Munoz, who now resides in the Los Angeles area, made the trip especially for the concert. As part of his opening message he encouraged students to follow their dreams and to be themselves. students: Daniel said that when he was a student at Gerber School, sometimes people made fun of him. Did that hurt? Yes. Did that stop him from believing that he could be a famous singer one day? No. He told us to believe in our dreams and never let anyone stop us. El Ausente wore pink pants and a leather jacket with feathers on his shoulders to our concert today. That outfit was chosen because he wanted to repre- sent his true self. Even though he knows that no one in Gerber dresses like a singing star from L.A., he proud- ly wore his flashy clothes and encouraged students to always be themselves. Munoz did a second concert for the upper grades in the afternoon.
