Madison Bumgarner shut down the night's game received a 7.6 rating and 12 share, and that it was seen by 12.2 million viewers, according to fast national ratings by Nielsen Media Research. The rating dropped 13 percent from the 8.7/14 for St. Louis' 3-2 victory over Texas in Game 1 last year, which averaged 14.2 mil- lion viewers. That broke the low set the previous year when the Giants' 11-7 win over the Rangers received an 8.9. Fox said this year's opener had a higher rating at 9 p.m. EDT (8.8 to 8.7). But viewership fell after San Francisco took a 6-0 lead behind Pablo San- doval, who wound up tying the Series record with three home runs. Still, Fox was the high- est-rated network in prime time and had its highest- rated prime-time program since May's season finale of ''American Idol.'' The rating is the per- centage of television households tuned to a pro- gram, and the share is the percentage of homes watching among those with TVs on at the time. Without a new col- bargaining lective agreement that would end the league's lockout of players on its 40th day, the NHL vowed to cut the season short. An announcement officially taking a full schedule out of play wasn't immediately planned. Major money-making events such as the upcoming outdoor Win- ter Classic and the All- Star game could soon be in peril, too. ''No contact, and I don't anticipate any announcements today,'' NHL deputy commis- sioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press in an email Thursday. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman already painted a pessimistic picture on Wednesday, saying at a news confer- ence for the Islanders' move to Brooklyn that, MCT file photo NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in a 1995 file photo. started Nov. 2. ''Unfortunately, it looks like an 82-game season is not going to be a real- ity.'' The league has already canceled all 135 scheduled games through Nov. 1, but the thought was those could be rescheduled if a deal was reached by the end of Thursday and play In making its most recent offer to the play- ers, the NHL presented a proposal that included a 50-50 split of hockey- related revenues. But that was contingent on the sides making the Thursday deadline and getting the season under way following a week of training camp. The union responded with three counterpro- posals, all of which would get the sides to a 50-50 deal, but the league rejected them quickly because they didn't work off the NHL's offer. Talks then broke down, and the NHL turned down the union's offer to return to the table this week with no preconditions. The NHL wants any- thing and everything open to discussion. The league's position is if the players' associ- ation isn't willing to negotiate off the NHL's offer — which Bettman has called the league's best — or make a coun- teroffer using that pro- posal as a framework, then there is no sense in meeting just to meet. ''The fact of the mat- ter is there are just sometimes that you need to take time off because it's clear that you can't do anything to move the process for- ward,'' Bettman said. ''We're at one of those points right now because we gave our very best offer. That offer, for better or for worse, was contingent on playing an 82-game season. So I think things actually in some respects may get more difficult.'' See NHL, page 2B fly in the eighth, and that was plenty for the Giants. Game 3 will be Saturday night in Detroit and for once, the masters of the October comeback aren't playing from behind. The Giants overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Cincinnati in the best-of-five division series and escaped a 3-1 hole against St. Louis in the NLCS. The loss certainly left the favored Tigers wondering what else could go wrong. Prince Fielder was thrown out at the plate by a hair and moments later starting pitcher Doug Fister was struck squarely in the head by a line drive. The 6-foot-8 Fister managed to stay on the mound, and even excelled. Bumgarner more than matched him, however, allowing just two hits before the San Francisco bullpen closed it out before another pulsating crowd. Santiago Casilla pitched a perfect eighth and Sergio Romo worked the ninth for a save in the combined two- hitter, leaving Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera in a huge hole heading back to Comerica Park. Anibal Sanchez will start for the Tigers against Ryan Vogelsong in Detroit. According to playoff points released Sunday, Yreka (6-2, 1-2 Northern Athletic League) current- ly holds the final playoff spot with the No. 8 seed. Eight teams earn Divi- sion II postseason berths, and the Cards, currently ninth, could make the playoffs with by winning out against Yreka tonight and West Valley (7-1, 2-1 NAL) in Week 10. A loss against West Valley would leaves a murkier path toward the postseason. Yreka's strong overall record could be a bit deceiving. The Miners share a league win against Anderson with the Cards. But Yreka won in a less convincing fashion at 27- 26. The Cards dominated the second half against the Cubs to sail to a 41-20 rout.
