4A Daily News – Thursday, October 25, 2012 Pastimes Trumpet legend Bobby Shew to play in Chico Saturday World-renowned trumpet player Bobby Shew has performed in the big band groups of Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich and Tommy Dorsey, among others. He has also backed up a who's who of pop stars, including Elvis. Shew's solo CD work has garnered a Grammy nomination and also a Jazz Album of The Year award. He has played on soundtracks of major motion pictures, includ- ing "Grease" (I and II), and "Rocky" (I and II). Rarely does a trumpet player of this magnitude make it to Chico. His performance with the Jazz X-Press on Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre will be a must see, according to Rocky Winslow, director of Jazz Studies at CSU, Chico. "Having Bobby here will be like having Yoda on campus — he will leave an everlasting, thought-provoking impression on our stu- dents and all else who take advantage of his performance, master classes and workshops." Winslow said much of the program for the Sat- urday night performance was still up in the air and wouldn't be finalized until Shew and the Jazz X-Press rehearse togeth- er a few days before the concert. Works being considered, though, are Thad Jones' "Zec," Shew's "Breakfast Wine" and Tom Harrell's "Ter- restris," among many others. Arts & entertainment Redding's 125th Symphony to celebrate REDDING — The Shasta Symphony Orchestra will per- form a musical concert on Sunday, Oct. 28, to celebrate the city of Redding's 125th anniversary. The concert will be at 3 p.m. in the Shasta College Theater. The concert will feature Redding soloists and composers, plus music from 1887, the year of the city's founding. Local pianist Jeremiah Trujillo will perform Mozart's "Piano Con- cert No. 20 in D minor." The Shasta Symphony Orchestra will premiere a new work by Redding composer and Simp- son University professor Dan Pinkston, titled "Symphony No. 2." Dvorak's "Slavonic Dances, Op. 72," from 1887, will create a connection with the popular styles of the time. Final- ly, Redding composer Terry Riley's world-famous master- work "In C" will create a soundscape for preconcert and intermission activities. Pinkston's "Symphony No. 2" was composed in the sum- mer of 2012 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Redding. The piece consists of three move- ments, played without pause. "The work uses a wide range of techniques and sounds, including some interesting musical quotations," Pinkston said. "These include folk song ('O Danny Boy'), Gregorian chant ('Dies Irae'), classical music (Berg's 'Violin Concer- to') and popular song (U2's 'New Year's Day')." While not a programmatic work, the piece's intensity and drama reflect the rugged beauty of Redding's natural land- scape. The Shasta Symphony Orchestra is a cooperative ensem- ble of Shasta College and Simpson University. Music direc- tor and conductor Dr. Dwayne Corbin is also associate pro- fessor of instrumental music at Simpson University. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.simp- sonu.edu/musicevents. Tickets are $10 general/$8 senior/$5 student and will also be available at the ticket counter of the Shasta College Theater.
