T his time last fall, we wrote a column with the above title, as there was a lot of good news to share. Turns out, this year is even better. We hope that we can run this column indefinitely and that the chapter gets even stronger and higher achieving! Brotherhood hike to Cowels Mountain with the entire chapter. GOOD NEWS FROM CALIFORNIA DELTA For Alumni And Friends oF the CAliForniA deltA ChApter no. 25 • FAll 2017 sAn diego stAte university, sigmA phi epsilon inFormAtion www.CAdeltAAlumni.org Cal Delta News V iews & C alifornia Delta alumni from the 1960s gathered for an informal lunch at Bully's East on Thursday, November 9, at noon. Our special guest was historian Dan Moore, who has written a compassionate biography of Brother Steve Joyner '66. Steve was an active and enthusiastic member of Cal Delta. Noted for his football prowess, Steve was an All-American at Fullerton JC and played at SDSU for the legendary Don Coryell. After graduation from SDSU in June 1966, he volunteered for the Marine Officer Corps. He was killed in action in Vietnam just two years later. Moore's book, Promise Lost, is available on Amazon. Thanks to Bob Gibbs '63 for making the lunch arrangements and to Bob Gaines '67 for coordinating with the author, Dan Moore. 1. CA Delta was awarded the Dean's Trophy at a special Homecoming brunch on Saturday, October 21. The Dean's Trophy is awarded to the top-performing IFC fraternity during the previous academic year. Caryl Montero-Adams, SDSU assistant director of Student Life and Leadership, offered the following, "Congratulations! Sigma Phi Epsilon is being recognized with the fall 2017 Dean's Trophy! This award is given to a chapter within the Interfraternity Council that exemplifies the values of fraternity and sorority life at San Diego State University." This is the seventh Dean's Trophy for CA Delta since chartering in 2004 and the first after a three-year layoff. Previously, the chapter had been awarded the Dean's Trophy for six successive school years. 2. CA Delta achieved a 3.25 GPA, the highest IFC GPA for spring 2017 and the highest ever for the chapter. This is the third consecutive semester that CA Delta men have earned the top IFC GPA award. 3. With the highest GPA comes the highest number of men who earned a GPA steak dinner reward, with a total of 39 men who scored a 3.5 for the semester and/or have a 3.5 or better overall GPA. The steak dinner was held on October 17. 4. We continue to enjoy the gift of academic mentorship from CA Delta faculty fellow and SDSU faculty advisor Christine Probett. On Friday, September 29, Christine held the first of five academic success class sessions. Forty-five men learned the finer points of effective time management. First-year members and those continuing members with struggling GPAs are required to attend. No other IFC fraternity at SDSU has this benefit, and very few around the country have it as well. 5. Fall recruitment was very successful, with the signing of 42 new members. CA Delta continues to select only the highest qualified men, identified through its Balanced Leader Scholarship Program. Freshmen are required to have at least a 3.5 high school GPA and non-freshman must have at least a 3.0. Remembering Steve Joyner '66
