A: It's never easy to answer these ones, because the deci- sions networks make about which shows to rerun and when are even more mysteri- ous than the decisions about which new shows to keep and which to cancel. The problem is, networks have 76 years of commercial TV broadcasting to choose from when picking shows to re- run (commercial TV began in the U.S. in 1941, bringing with it the first "TV shows" as we know them). All this is to say that it's pos- sible people have stopped air- ing "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" just to give some- thing else a try for a while. To be fair, the show has had its share of chances. It's been around almost as long as com- mercial TV — it debuted on ABC in 1955 and aired 226 epi- sodes over six years. It's con- sidered an early classic of the western TV genre (it debuted the same year as "Gunsmoke" and the two are often credited with pioneering the western TV boom that followed). If you're aching for more of O'Brian in his most famous role, you can try looking up the TV movie he made in 1994, "Wyatt Earp: Return to Tomb- stone," or you can look up an even more obscure appearance: In 1959, he appeared as Wyatt Earp for about a second in the continued on page A14
