Housemother Julie Croft Impressed with the
Caliber of Men in Sigma Chi
T
hree years ago, if you asked Julie Croft what a housemother
was, she would have told you she had no idea. At the same
time, Julie was going through a difficult time and moved to
Manhattan to be closer to family. With the move, she left her
old job behind and was in the market for a place to live. After
learning about an open housemother position from a friend,
Julie decided to take a chance and begin her first experience
in Greek life. "I had no idea that I would fall completely in
love with the job and find my perfect career in the process,"
she said. "In the short time I've been here, I've seen the active
brothers from last year grow in unexpected ways and the group
coming in is constantly proving worthy of the Sigma Chi name. I am so
very proud of our fraternity and what we've accomplished."
Julie began her role with Sigma Chi in February and has used her back-
ground in property management to fill the role of housemother nicely. The
constant change in daily tasks coupled with fun activities such as chapter
dinners, intramurals, and judging competitions has kept Julie busy and in
love with her job. Although her time with the chapter has only just begun,
she has already seen positive changes. "Our GPA has risen and the morale
and connection in the house has improved. We have a great
group of men who are truly interested in becoming not only
better as Sigma Chi members, but as human beings."
Part of Julie's role is assisting with pledge training, and this
fall she has already hosted sessions on etiquette and sexual
assault prevention. One of Julie's goals is to share her positive
life outlook with active brothers and encourage them to expect
and encourage each member to become the best version of
himself. "I think so often in today's youth, they are given the
message that something is wrong with them. My goal is to try
and change that perception," she said. "I hope with the little things I say
and do, they will gain confidence in the power of positive thinking and
self-confidence."
It's difficult for Julie to pinpoint her favorite experience as a housemother,
but she will admit nothing compares to the sound of a big group of boom-
ing voices saying "Hey Mom!" as she walks into a room. Julie has two
grown sons and can be reached at sigmachihd@gmail.com.
