136TH ANNUAL PIG DINNER HELD OCTOBER 6 T he 136th annual Norris Pig Dinner was held Friday, October 6. It began with cocktails at the Chapter House, followed by a banquet at the Oread Hotel. Brothers observed a new replica of The Cheney Cup, which is now prominently displayed in the dining room at the House. It stands to motivate a renewed effort to compete for and, eventually, win the Cheney Cup once again. Kevin Mitchelson '79, Archon, introduced Phi Gam dignitaries and appealed to all in attendance to donate to the Mighty Proud campaign one last time before it comes to a close at the end of 2017. Windows still need to be replaced, the HVAC upgraded, and debt paid down. All donations are greatly appreciated. Keynote Speaker Jim Link, Ohio Wesleyan '82, inspired the Brothers by calling for a focus on "Building Courageous Leaders." Jim is responsible for introducing our new brand identity to Phi Gam, and functions as a national spokesman and Archon for Fiji in this regard. He urged all to focus on innovating ways to achieve new member education goals without hazing. He pointed to the recent, sad experience at the Beta house at Penn State University. Stewart Horejsi '59 spoke about his love for Phi Gam and his generous new scholarship gift. Matt Johnson '18, Chapter President, updated everyone on the successful fall semester, which has included a record-setting Parents Day, Islander Week of philanthropy, a Friday night dance contest at the House for the USO, and a tradition—recapturing Fiji Island at Dunn's Landing in Baldwin City, Kansas. Lorenzo Aiello '19 introduced the new member class, songs were sung, and the pig's rear end was kissed. Charlie Crawford '52, the oldest Brother in attendance, kissed the snout. Andy Morrison '87, House Corporation President, announced Tuffy Mayor as the 2017 recipient of the John Kapfer award, which is given annually to a graduate brother who has devoted a significant amount of his time, talent, and resources to improving the Pi Deuteron Chapter. Andy thanked Tuffy for his great work and also recognized and thanked the members of the House Corporation for their service, which include Kurt Goeser '93, Rex Henoch '79, Mike Paul '85, and Brian Johnston '87. He also thanked the undergraduate cabinet for their service to the Chapter. Andy ended his remarks by stating that it has never been a better time to be a Fiji and a Jayhawk. Brian Johnston '87, a new House Corporation member, spoke of his desire to contribute to more Graduate support for the Fraternity. Brian, along with Jeff Bloskey '89, President of the BCA, will expand the number of Graduates involved to support the Chapter. Tuffy Mayor '66, Purple Legionnaire, accepted the John Kapfer Award and thanked House Mom Jackie Henderson for her performance above and beyond the call of duty. Jackie is a true team player. Tuffy also acknowledged John Martin '60, who donated three new portraits to the House. He will paint portraits of Stewart Horejsi, Steve Bunten '60, and John Bumgarner '64. Finally, Tuffy thanked Stewart and John Horejsi '90 for their game-changing scholarship gift. All Brothers promised Stewart to aggressively utilize the new gift to induct great young men with high academic ambitions. Please help identify prospective new members and e-mail their names to us. This new gift can lead Pi Deuteron to leadership of GPA and the Cheney Cup. FIJI Jayhawker 4 Alumni, Mom's Club, and Active Members Make Summer Renovations a Reality S ummer has come and gone and classes have begun. A summer highlight was a visit from Executive Director Bill Martin to help steer pledge education and Fiji Island. He was terrific, and we wish he could visit KU more often. Chapter House Updates Summer featured a lot of work in the house. Ceilings were repainted after a sprinkler head burst. Thanks to the quick response from Five Star, our maintenance company, and a sizable number of undergradu- ates, there was minimal water damage. Five Star was on the premises within an hour and had a number of powerful fans at work after shutting down the water supply. Members spent the night capturing the water. Thanks to a donation from John Bumgarner '64, the coffee bar was enlarged to accommodate a mini-fridge. The hallway was then cleared of the refrigerator that sat outside Mom's apartment doorway. New bathroom and hallway floors were installed on second and third floors. They were sorely needed and look great. This project was on time and on budget. Two brothers, Carter O'Daniel '19 and Andrew Bellereve '19, spent hours this summer power washing the patio and cleaning then painting the basement walls. Next, the basement scholar- ship room will be completed. Mom's Club Donates Landscaping Improvements After that, Lawrence Landscape was employed to add a sidewalk to the basement door, trim and shape the front bushes, plant new shrubs in the planter beds at the front door, add an irrigation system to keep the new Boxwoods, and impress lighting to illuminate our letters, shield, and front entrance so that the house is shown off at night. In addition, the weeds near the back door were cleared so that river rock could be added near the bicycle rack and two new wrought iron fences were added to the front patio. The Mother's Club paid for all of these landscaping improvements. Thank you, moms! Lastly, a team of undergraduates planned the first Fiji Islander party and philanthropy week in seven years. The event raised money for the USO and was a huge success. More than 300 KU students traveled just outside Baldwin City to celebrate Fiji Islander. The event was fun, successful, and safe. Congratulations, Pi Deuteron. The Island is back! The annual Norris Pig Dinner was held on October 6, complete with a cocktail reception at the house prior to dinner, which allowed all guests a chance to mingle and reconnect. Fraternally, Tuffy Mayor '66 Purple Legionnaire tuffy@mayoriiiproperties.com
