A s an out-of-state student from Atlanta, Georgia, Jonathan Kaplan '12 sought out a way to network and make friends at the University of Texas. He found both of those—and more—at Alpha Nu. He shared, "Alpha Nu gave me a home away from home and a family that cared for and supported me as much as my own family did." After earning a degree in Management Information Systems from the McCombs School of Business, Jonathan worked in chemical sales at DuPont, but left after three years to take the House Dad position at Alpha Nu. After a year spent helping friends, family, and even some of the undergraduates navigate the cryptocurrency space with success, Jonathan recently started a hedge fund with a fellow Longhorn graduate, and in addition to his current donations has pledged 100% of his first year's profits to the Alpha Nu… A Tradition to Build Upon capital campaign. Jonathan claims his achievements are largely due to Alpha Nu, as his experience serving the Chapter taught him skills that prepared him for his future, both personally and professionally. "Pledgeship made me the man I am today," he says, "and helping to rebuild the Chapter as an active gave me an appreciation for the importance of leaving a legacy. Having the opportunity to continue doing so as the House Dad is literally a dream come true for me." Jonathan plans on serving the Chapter for the foreseeable future. "The undergrads and I are determined to make Alpha Nu the best Chapter the Sigma Chi Fraternity has ever seen, and we've done some incredible work these past few years." He quotes a rising Chapter GPA, record donations for Fight Night and Derby Days, and top-notch recruitment as just a few examples of the success Alpha Nu has recently seen. Although Alpha Nu continues to improve every year, the Chapter House is in need of repair. Without an exceptional house that meets the growing needs of the Chapter, Alpha Nu cannot meet its full potential. Jonathan urges his brothers to think about what the Chapter has given to them, and to get more involved as alumni. "Even as an alumnus," he said, "I've found that the more I give back to Sigma Chi, the more Sigma Chi gives back to me." Sigma Chi Sets the Stage Growing Recruitment Numbers Propel Philanthropic Events T he Alpha Nu Chapter had an eventful summer with students interning for dozens of companies and active members studying abroad all over the world. We are excited for the fall semester and are eager for the opportunities to support the community around us and bond together as a Chapter. Rise in Recruitment Over the summer, Austin Wallace '20, our recruitment chairman, led us to recruit a new class of 50 members. These incoming freshman and sophomores come from all over the United States, ranging from Seattle, Washington, to Minnetonka, Minnesota. We expect only the highest commitment and respect from these pledges as they represent what it means to be a Sigma Chi. Semester of Philanthropic Events Our social calendar has been planned out and we hope to see many of our alumni at our events. Texas Sigma Chi philanthropy is off to another great semester. Recently, a few brothers took Nicholas, Alpha Nu's honorary member, to the movies to see Logan Lucky. This fall, Sigma Chi will continue the Wooldridge mentorship program, and we are currently on the waitlist to adopt a second B+ Hero for the Chapter. Fight Night, our major philanthropic event, will be held on November 10. We are anticipating another successful night in raising money and awareness for The Huntsman Cancer Institute, the B+ Foundation, and Woolridge Elementary School. Parents Weekend will be on November 11 as well. BUILDING THE BRIDGE whY jOnathan Kaplan '12 inCreasinglY suppOrts alpha nu Zach Wilhelm '19 and Jared Cole '19 took Nicholas, our honorary member of the Alpha Nu Chapter, to the movies before the fall semester officially started. Sloan Turrentine '19 and Jared Cole '19 spend a weekend in June visiting Interlaken, Switzerland, to paraglide while studying abroad. He encourages alumni to come out for a tailgate, Fight Night, or a Chapter dinner/meeting to see for themselves just where their money is going. "Your donations aren't simply constructing a new house," he insists. "You're investing in our Chapter's ability to mold bright young men into the leaders of tomorrow. You're building the bridge for those who hope to make a positive impact on the world." Being a full-time House Dad while running a hedge fund doesn't leave Jonathan with much free time, but he does enjoy reading, riding his motorcycle, international travel, and watching Jordan Peterson lectures on YouTube. Overall though, he most enjoys being the House Dad and helping his undergraduates become the best they can be. Jonathan welcomes alumni to reach out to him to learn more about the Chapter and its events this year. You can connect with him at jonathan@ numeris.capital or (770) 241-4501.
