3 Alpha Chi Omega T he chapter celebrated the 2017 new members class on Bid Day, August 20, with the theme Welcome to Paradise. Seniors greeted them after they opened their bid cards on Faurot Field and escorted them to the chapter house for refreshments, photos and introductions to their Alpha Pals. This new member class consists of 63 freshmen and nine sophomores. Twelve new members are legacies and two more have an aunt or cousin who were Alpha Chis. The average high school GPA is 3.7. Members are from seven states (including Hawaii) and Puerto Rico. Roughly one-third of the new members are from Illinois. The new member class is a group of talented, accomplished, passionate and service-oriented young women who have been recognized with many awards. Nearly every sport is represented, including a former captain of the ski team, a championship golfer and volleyball, basketball and lacrosse players from championship teams. Two new members are active in the National Charity League, one member is an active participant in beauty pageants and another has numerous FFA awards. New members have volunteered for nearly every cause, ranging from mission trips to tutoring to raising funds. While the number of potential new members registering for recruitment has declined in recent years, the percentage of women who joined a sorority during formal recruitment 2017 is slightly higher than 2016. The percentage of Greek students at the university continues to increase annually, up from 22 percent in 2010 to 28.6 percent in 2016. Formal recruitment 2017 is being viewed as a success by Mizzou's Greek life staff as all 15 chapters achieved quota. The smaller number of women registering for formal recruitment, down several hundred after peaking in 2014 at nearly 2,000, reflects declining birth rates and declining enrollment at Mizzou. The addition of 72 new members makes Alpha Chi one of the largest of the 15 sororities on campus, comfortably above campus total. Welcome, ladies, to a lifetime of sisterhood.
