S i g m a P i B e t a G a m m a . c o m 3 As announced in President Martin's cover letter, contributions to the building fund are considered tax-deductible. We have joined the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing. The Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing (SPGH) originated at the University of Illinois in 1988. Their first goal is to preserve, renovate, and restore the chapter houses. Their second goal is to educate not only the university community but the public at large about the historic significance of fraternity and sorori- ty chapters. Values, traditions, and friendships were formed by fraternity and sorority involvement in these chapter houses during college years and contributed significantly to the success of alumni. SPGH wants to help ensure your fraternal structure is preserved to continue this influ- ence. SPGH will help us maintain the Greek community's appearance and character, which gives it an identity and a personality all its own. Beta-Gamma Brothers make the history and SPGH helps us preserve it. The SPGH is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 organization to support the preservation of historic structures. This is the basis for the charitable tax-deduction that is available to donors. Proposed projects are reviewed by the SPGH for conformance to the re- quirements for eligibility. The Preservation Grant Agreement documents the improvements to the House's property that have been specifically approved by the SPGH. The SPGH may, at its discretion, request docu- mentation of work. It is the responsibility of the recipient organization to ensure that the grant monies are used as specified by the Preservation Grant Agreement. Deviation from the agreement may result in loss of the donor's tax deduction. It will be important to identify if you are seeking the charitable tax-deduction. Not all our renovations can be considered as part of the grant. So, it will be necessary to raise some funds (approximately $150,000) outside that status requirement. When completing your donation form, please mark the appropriate boxes to indicate how your gift is to be used. The following is an official notice from the SPGH: The Society was formed to aid in the preservation of historically and architecturally significant Greek houses, to work to have additional houses listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to fund historical research/ writing projects, and to conduct educational open houses and seminars to educate the public about these Greek- affiliated structures. To aid in preservation and rehabilitation of the chapter houses, the society will provide grants for: • Health and Safety Code requirements that do not result in the loss of character • Major Structural rehabilitation or restoration • Exterior rehabilitation or restoration • Interior rehabilitation or restoration All donations made to the Society may be deducted as provided in Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Direct gifts of ap- preciated securities, beneficiary designations under wills and/or living trusts, and other similar gifts are welcome. Bequests, legacies, devises, transfers, or gifts to the Society are deductible for Federal estate and gift tax purposes if they meet the applicable provisions of sections 2055, 2106, and 2522 of the Code.
