Box 220 Red Bluff, CA 96080 Since 1970, about every four years, the Federal Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and California's Air Resources Board (CARB), increases the costs of diesel engines through more stringent and costly emis- sions controls. My 45-year career as a chief engineer of a diesel engine manufacturer, a heavy duty truck builder and a transit bus and motor home chassis builder, has involved the develop- ment of products with reduced emissions and improved fuel economy. About 90 percent of the emissions reduction was achieved by 1990. EPA and CARB claim additional 90 percent emissions reduction with each new regula- tion cycle, but it is 90 percent of nothing. The Tehama County Board of Supervisors should be compli- mented for rallying against the latest bureaucratic CARB man- date to require farmers and ranch- ers to replace their older diesel engines with more costly and newer versions. A new study by the University of California at Riverside has found that char- broiling a hamburger generates more particulate emissions than 80,000 pound diesel trucks create while hauling stuff back and forth across America. (Reference, Automotive News, 10/1/12) According to the study, you Emissions Editor: would have to drive an 18-wheel- er about 143 expressway miles to create the same particulate emis- sions as cooking a big, juicy ham- burger patty. California has gone overboard in mandating ever decreasing emissions at substantially increased cost. Mandates for Solar and Wind projects, with our tax dollars, is another example of government waste. Joseph Neff, Corning spoken by both men and the acceptance of such idiocy by the American public is downright shameful. They are debates of non-issues, a distraction from the attacks on our civil and eco- nomic liberties here at home. Neither political puppet has mentioned the Constitution — a document meant to restrain the government, not allow the gov- ernment to restrain us. Both pro- claim a desire to balance the nation's budget, but how can either man balance the budget by waging more endless wars over- seas? It takes money to expand an empire. I feel embarrassed for indi- viduals who attach themselves to Team Obama or Team Romney. The amount of ridiculousness Team America Editor: Both promise to create more jobs if elected, but government is not in the business of creating jobs, only the free market can create jobs. Neither has mentioned the Federal Reserve, a private bank- ing institution, which prints money out of thin air, or the fact that by printing endless money the currency is systematically devalued. Ron Paul in a recent interview said, "Why does Obama not attack Romney for being the Goldman Sachs candidate?" It's because they both are within the establishment where they need the Federal Reserve and the lender of the last resort to make sure that you can take all the risks in the world, but don't sweat it because government will be there and the Fed will be there and they're going to get bailed out. Goldman Sachs is winning the debates while America is los- ing. Nelissa Goedhart, Orland Editor: There's lots of opinions and questions placed on this editori- al page. Also, some answers or solutions for a lot of our prob- lems be they political, or finan- cial, that this great country faces however, not everyone seems to agree with the answers or solu- tions or opinions presented. The loudest of the local left, with an exaggerated opinion of her opinion Pat John- ston, just can't say enough bad things about Assemblyman Jim Nielsen. She's been railing about Nielsen's not being a resident of Gerber every chance she gets and includes whatever else negative she can think of. In my humble opinion she strains out a gnat and swallows a camel. While condemning Nielsen she and her cohorts overlook the question of Obama's place of birth, the lies, squandering of stimulus money to his supporters for green energy and his use of the Cloward and Piven Strategy for collapsing the economy and now the Benghazi cover-up scandal. Sheriff Joe's investigation of Unfit president Obama's birth certificate, by his posse of experts, has raised questions, if not proved, that it's a forgery; add, too, that experts and scientists, both here and abroad, have also come to the same conclusion. Is he qualified to be president? I would like to know for sure, wouldn't you? A123 Systems Inc. filed for bankruptcy on $249M of stimu- lus money. They manufactured batteries for electric cars. How many of these so called green energy con jobs have gone bankrupt? The Cloward-Piven Strategy, Your Turn Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, were Soci- ologists at Columbia University — sound familiar? Their strate- gy was to overload the govern- ment bureaucracy with impossi- ble demands causing an eco- nomic collapse of our govern- ment and the fall of capitalism. What was it Obama said about transforming America? We now have more people on welfare, food stamps, in poverty and unemployed and underem- ployed with the exception of public employees. Local, state and federal gov- ernments are broke, yet public unions demand higher wages and benefits for public employ- ees while the private sector gets in line for unemployment checks and food stamps. After 60 years of manufac- turing soup in Sacramento, Campbell Soup will be closing and will add 700 more people to California's unemployment line. Thanks, Gov. Brown with your help California will col- lapse before the federal govern- ment. attacked by terrorists killing Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans after mul- tiple requests for more security, let the cover-up begin. The administration immediately blamed it on a spontaneous response to an anti-Islam YouTube video. Vice-President Biden, during the debate, claimed they were never told about the request for more secu- rity. That explains the problem; no one knows who is driving this train. The administration denied security and lied about it, four people died. You know: "Ameri- cans died and Obama lied." A heapin' helpin' of our hospitality Commentary Every October public meet- ings across Tehama County take 15 minutes out of the mundane routine of passing consent agen- das to open their doors for live music. As a mayor, councilman, concerned citizen or even a reporter you can count on Tex Ash showing up with his crew to play some music to promote the upcoming Western Open Fiddle Championships. After Tex is done strumming his big standup bass, he says something that every resident should hear. event used to be held in Red- ding, until circumstances prompted a change in venue. The new host of Red Bluff and the Tehama District Fairground was chosen. Tex then explains in all sin- cerity that throughout the Red- ding years the Western Open Fiddle Championships never became a community event, but within two years of being held in He tells the story of when his Red Bluff it became just that. It's promoted by the city leaders and the chamber of com- merce and attended by residents who wouldn't know a fiddle from a violin. Red Bluff treats it as its own and accepts it into its family. That's important for the Western Open, an event Tex often describes as being suc- cessful because of its family environment. events in Tehama County as well. This is true for so many other every city, Tehama County has that small town closeness that makes them feel cozy when they're held here. I can't count the number of While events are held in times I've heard an organizer say they like holding their event in Tehama County because the participants love coming here. They like going into town and visiting the shops and eating at our restau- rants. And it doesn't take going through a traffic jam or confusing directions to do it. People, mainly the younger sect, will say there's never anything to do in Red Bluff. On the contrary, there's always people doing something here. I think many would be surprised from how far away participants come to take part in these festivals and championships. The Western Open has contestants from as far away from Montana and a judge coming from West Virginia. The upcoming Paws for a Cause cow dog competition already has calls from the East Coast in preparation for next year and the inaugural event hasn't even happened yet. As the Branding Project kicks around ideas on how to market the area, members shouldn't overlook Tehama County's hos- pitality. There are endless economic opportuni- ties in lodging, food and retail in hosting events without the impact of commer- cial or industrial giants. Rich Greene er.
