Doing "Late Nite Eats" has been an absolute joy for its host, Jordan Andino. After all, in what other job do you get to travel the continent, sample a city's best late-night fare and network with a variety of different chefs while taking in the burg's sights, sounds and nightlife? And get paid for it? It sounds like a pretty good gig, but the New York-based chef says he has one gripe. "And it's barely a gripe," he says. "I'm used to working as a chef so I do 14 to 16 hours on my feet in front of a hot stove or as a restaurateur greeting guests, dealing with headaches and what not every day, so I'm used to this at this point. But somehow the filming schedule and the traveling and the living out of a hotel and then the constant flights to and from New York to check on the restaurants and all this, I wasn't really ready for it and I have a newfound respect for people who travel as their job. It's highly impressive." Each Thursday, Andino heads to a different city to try the after-hours grub, meet the chefs behind them and mingle with the diners. They can range from an eatery in Pittsburgh that serves up almost 30 different kinds of grilled-cheese sandwiches to a soul food and barbecue restaurant in Atlanta. There are also stops in cities such as Montreal, St. Louis, Vancouver, Nashville, Toronto, Charleston, S.C., and Providence, R.I. In the Oct. 12 episode, he ventures to Portland, Maine, where he found a diverse culinary scene where more than lobster and seafood were on the menu, the themes were imaginative and the drinks were cheap. "I remember it was Thursday happy hour," Andino says, "and I went to this bar. ... It was me and friends and I was like, 'I'll take two shots of Fireball and two (Pabst Blue Ribbon) drafts.' The girl, the bartender goes to me, 'That'll be $6.' And I was like, 'Alright, so $24? Six times four?' She's like, 'No, it's $6 for everything.' And I was like, 'Oh my God! This is insane! This is what people pay every day!' So that was just an incredible experience." Andino also found reasonable eating and drinking in a place that looked like an old grocery store but held a surprise within. "You walk down these stairs," he says, "and then there's this door and then you go to the door and it's locked. And then you hear music and you're, 'What the hell? Where is everyone?' And then there's this wall with a plant attached to a drawer. So you're like, 'What the hell?' So you just kind of like fiddle with it and eventually the plant pulls the door open. So there were just all these amazing elements. ... And even better, $5 everything – $5 cocktails, $5 drafts. Everything was $5. The entire menu was $5." Jordan Andino What book are you currently reading? " 'White Heat.' Marco Pierre White." What did you have for dinner last night? "I had a JG Melon bacon cheeseburger. And that was at 1:45 am." What is your next project? "I'm looking at different restaurants around the tri-state area. I'm cooking for the New York Giants this upcoming Monday ... and then I'll be partaking in the New York Food and Wine Festival on Oct. 14 and I'm doing a King's Hawaiian Bread and Fox Sports college football endorsement as well." When was your last vacation, where and why? "My last one was to Tulum, Mexico."
