Creator, executive producer and star Seth MacFarlane has been playing it coy when asked that question about his newest Fox series, saying that he's leaving it to viewers to determine for themselves what the show is. There's no question, though, that "The Orville" con- tains some of his trademark humor ... as when spaceship commander Ed (MacFarlane) interrupts an alien command- er's threat to destroy the Orville by asking the enemy whether he thinks marriage is easy. (To which, of course, the alien thoughtfully responds.) On the other hand, "Star Trek" fan MacFarlane also is ob- serving many traditions of the genre, so it works both ways. Q : I was sorry to learn of the death of Troy Gen- try of Montgomery Gentry. I remember watching that duo in many award shows. Did they ever win any Gram- mys? — Michael Barnett, Glen Burnie, Md. A : No. The biggest year Gentry and partner Eddie Montgomery had on the award circuit was 2000, shortly after they began as a duo (having previously been in a couple of other bands together). That year, they were named favor- ite new country artist by the American Music Awards, top new vocal duo or group at the Academy of Country Music Awards, and vocal duo of the year at the Country Music As- sociation Awards. In 2008, Montgomery Gentry received a Grammy nomination for best country vocal performance by a duo or group for "Lucky Man," and they received many other country-award nominations throughout the 2000s. Q : Someone told me that on "The Bob Newhart Show," Bob and Emily were supposed to become late-in- life parents. Is that true? — Joanne Lawrence, Buffalo, N.Y. A : As Newhart tells it — and has told us — he wanted to end his classic 1970s CBS sitcom one season shy of the run he was contracted for. The show's writers came up with a final-season premise in which Suzanne Pleshette's Emily would become pregnant, and Newhart's response to the first of those scripts was, "Who are you going to get to play Bob?" From the start, Newhart didn't want children on the show to set it apart from the smart-kids, not-so-smart-adults trope. And in the end, he got his way ... and got out of mak- ing a seventh season of the show, though of course, he would return to CBS several years later with the Vermont- inn-set "Newhart."
