Eddy Kilowatt – W7AZQ Quartzsite, Az. I know all of you are very aware of the summer's recent disasters here in the USA as well as Mexico and the Caribbean. We all saw many news stories of tragedy, loss of property and life as well as many acts of heroism by not only fi rst responders but ev- ery day citizens like you and me. Of course many government agencies, charity groups and private enterprise stepped up to the plate and many are still out there helping dig through the rubble and render assistance any way they can. What does this have to do with the Ham Shack you ask? In every instance of natural disaster and some- times even before the actual event, hams from all over the country and even the world come to- gether to help with communications. Many times from the heart of the disaster one or two hams have managed to set up a temporary station to get word out of their situation including damage re- ports and storm status. Somewhere either in the comfort of home, or inside an emergency commu- nications van or tent are other hams receiving this info and forwarding it to people that can relay that information to those that can then organize search and rescue, medical aid, food and water and all the other necessities of survival. There are many orga- nized communications groups including The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, RACES (Radio Ama- teur Civil Emergency Services) and ARES (Ama- teur Radio Service). Each of these groups differ in their missions and when they are called upon, but they all have the same goal…Provide emergency communications to help in time of need. In many cases hams also relay messages to fami- lies and friends on both sides of a disaster. Vic- tims of the quake or hurricane can report their status and this info is radioed to hams outside the disaster where this info can be posted on websites or local message boards or even by phone to the families of the victims that otherwise have no way of knowing how their loved ones are. As you can well imagine, phones lines, cell towers and internet may be com- pletely inoperable during and for many days or weeks after a major disaster. Radio is the only way to communi- cate and hams all over the world are ready to help. One of our own winter residents and per- sonal friend was travelling this summer in his RV/Mobile Ham Shack when he was called upon as a Red Cross Volunteer to go to Texas to assist during their hurricane then again to the Florida From the Ham Shack area. I hope to have more of his story when he returns to Quartzsite in a later issue. I would love to hear from other hams as well when you get back to The "Q" that were involved in Emergency coms during those operations. I hope this information will give you a little insight to the world of Amateur radio. I want to emphasize it is not all emergency and disaster. Ham radio is fun and a great way to meet some really cool people. 73 (Best Regards) till next time. Eddy Kilowatt, not his real name is an Extra Class Li- censed ham.
