The genius was in keeping the marauder unseen for much of the film, and in building up the humanity of the shark chasers. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) The success of "Jaws" was no fluke, Spielberg proved, as he made UFOs equally compelling by having the vessels and their alien occupants affect ordinary Earthlings. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) In saluting classic Saturday afternoon serials, Spielberg and filmmaking comrade George Lucas gave the movie world one of its iconic characters in adventurous Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford). "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) The best boy-and-his-alien story ever. Period. And how many kids have tried to make their bicycles fly since? "Jurassic Park" (1993) Movie technology keeps advancing, but at the time, dinosaurs never looked as believable as in Spielberg's version of the Michael Crichton novel about an "amusement park" fueled by prehistoric DNA. "Schindler's List" (1993) It's no small measure of Spielberg's storytelling skill that he developed this darkly realistic, true story in the same year he yielded the fantasy of "Jurassic Park." Boasting superb acting by Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes, this saga of one man's crusade to save war captives has had an ongoing life in Spielberg's resulting Shoah Foundation.
