SISTERHOOD THROUGH
PHILANTHROPY
Alpha Delta Emphasizes Service During Recruitment
W
hen my oldest daughter made her decision to
attend a small, liberal arts college in North
Carolina, the question came up about participating in
the recruitment process. She had certainly spent many
an hour at the Phi Mu house at Ole Miss and had loved
the expression of sisterhood and energy. But going to
a totally different place brought the anxiety of what
sorority life might be like elsewhere. I, of course,
encouraged it–it would be a great way to make a lot
of friends while experiencing what we call sisterhood.
Her reply was, "Mom, I get it. I know that sororities
work hard to help others and it is not just about swaps
and parties." Her college had already transitioned into a
philanthropy round during recruitment and she later told
me it was their biggest retention party. "They got it!"
As our recruitment season has ended and we have
prepared ourselves at the Phi Mu house, many of
us may be asked by mothers, daughters, and friends
about the benefits of sorority life. We may have lots
of obvious answers for these questions, but we must
be diligent to include the good that is accomplished
when sisters join together in a common purpose! It is an
important aspect of life on the Ole Miss campus.
Children's Miracle Network (CMN) is the Phi Mu
philanthropy and the creative ways to give to this
organization is where Alpha Delta excels. Bonnamu
is a popular event to raise money for CMN; and
this year Milkshakes for Miracles and Cheesin' for
Children have been added. There will be a lot to
talk about during Philanthropy round at recruitment
this year. The education of Potential New Members
on all the good that Phi Mu participates in will be
emphasized as one of the most powerful bonds that
Alpha Delta can offer.
So when you are posed with the questions about
sorority life at Ole Miss, please let them know that
when it comes to Alpha Delta Phi Mu and our
philanthropy – WE GET IT!
See you at the Homecoming open house!
