Will be hooked up with our trailer at Genes cous- ins church. Last couple weeks they have been cleaning up and repair- ing their classrooms and office. We have 15 big tubs full of donated items provided by the community of Quartzsite, which is filled with such marvelous folks who have so freely. We also have money to pur- chase gift cards at Home Depot and Lives for folks to purchase what they need. Please continue your prayers for them and those in Florida. Your gifts of love will be out to good use. Thank you all from the depths of our hearts. We will be loading our truck on Saturday at 10:00 AM and could use some help. Tubs too heavy for Gene and I to do alone. Please help, if you can. La Paz County - The Extension Office has recently received numerous calls about mesquites with dead branches or with some gooey stuff oozing out from the trunk or branches. Some mesquite trees around town and in the valley have also shown similar symptoms. (See Photos on page 11 for the symptoms) The symptoms described above are characteristic of the Metallic Wood Boring Beetle damage. The beetle belong to the Buprestid family. There are several species belonging to this family that have similar char- acteristics and feeding habits. The adults have a shiny, metallic sheen on the outer wings and/or under- sides. The larvae or grub has a small head attached to a flat thorax that looks like a flat head, which lends it its other name - Flat Headed Wood Borer. The adults lay their eggs on cracks or crevices on the bark and once they hatch, the larvae bore into the bark and feed on the layer just below the bark. This cuts off the wa- ter and nutrient supply to the branch that causes it to dry up. Occurrence of the damage or infestation are more prevalent during summers with extremely high temperatures. This gives a lot of stress to the trees making them more vulnerable to the insect. How do we prevent or control the damage then? Since trees are more vulnerable when stressed, we should minimize stressful conditions. Be sure to water your trees deeply when the forecasted temperatures are high. This will ensure that there will be enough water to replenish water loss due evaporation through the leaves. The water will also help cool down your trees. When the trees are already affected, a pesticide product that contains Imidacloprid can control the insect. One such product is called Bayer Ad- vanced Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed. It is a systemic product that is mixed with water, and drenched around the base of the trunk. The tree absorbs the chemical and the insects die when they feed on the treated tree. Be sure to follow the la- bel recommendation on how to use the product properly. Use personal protective equipment such as mask, googles and gloves when using any pesticide product.
