Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Is the death penalty wrong? Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: Nearly all religions consider killing to be wrong. So if killing is wrong, then all killing is wrong. The U.S. is the only Western democracy that still uses the death penalty. Because there have been a number of mistakes made in applying the death penalty, more and more states are passing moratoriums banning it . Since 1973, 140 death row inmates have been exonerated. Empirical evidence has shown that the death penalty is not a deterrent to violent crime. In fact, 67 percent of all law enforcement officials agree that the death penal- ty is not an effective crime-fighting tool. Another prob- lem with the death penalty is its finality. There are sev- eral cases where new evidence has been found to exon- erate someone only after they were put to death. And, the death penalty does not allow for redemption. Near- ly every religion has a belief in redemption. Our minds are infinitely malleable, so it is always possible for someone who has killed (for whatever reason) to turn their life around. Another false argument for the death penalty is that it is cheaper than housing an inmate for life. Again, empirical evidence has shown that is not the case. On average, the cost of appeals for death row inmates is approximately 70 percent more than hous- ing an inmate for life. In addition, the death penalty is used disproportionately against the poor, minori- ties and members of racial, ethnic and religious com- munities. A PROPER UNDERSTANDING The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: The death penal- ty is huge, and it is difficult to really get a handle on it. Society changes its mind so many times that it becomes hard to put a proper understanding in place. We feel that so much is needed to be known. A great number of people vacillate between their religious beliefs and society's desires to do what is right. In searching the Bible we find many instances where killing and/or murder was condemned. The first five books of the Old Testament were used to set the stan- dard for moral and religious living. In the New Testa- ment we see the teaching of Jesus identifying with what the Old Testament had determined, with some modifi- cations, was how people should be treated . We believe that it is immoral to take a life of any person who causes violence to his or her neighbor. We believe that whatever the circumstances are, we don't have the right to decide the fate of another indi- vidual. We believe that even when the evidence is impeccable, there are times when individuals are wrongly sentenced to death. As Christians we feel that we must be loving in our response even when we are being wronged and/or violated. It's a common thought for most people – the thought of desiring per- sonal change – change in life circum- stances and a new start in life. We are all familiar with the term, "turning over a new leaf." We are also familiar with our short follow through and our inability to fulfill our commitments. There is hope though, and newness of life waiting for each of us. We just need to receive the gift that God offers us. Let's consider the change in life cir- cumstances. Taking a look at our heart's condition is vital, for all the issues of our life come through our heart. "Keep your heart with all dili- gence, for out of it springs the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:2). The heart in ques- tion here, is our spiritual heart. Somewhere in our lives and in the culture of this generation, we have accepted the philosophy that change will make us happy. We count on something new and exciting that may be on the way, to stimulate us and energize our outlook on life. However, that's like expecting a balloon to fly once it has been popped with a sharp needle or just run out of air, for we all know that in reality, things do not always come to pass for our liking. Our lives may change through a Saturday, October 13, 2012 – Daily News 7A Looking for a new beginning? experience spiritual lack in life. Have you ever attempted to open a gift that had so much tape and tightly knotted ribbons that it was almost impossible to open? Well, it's not like that with our creator God. He has extended His gift of Jesus to us with open arms, and His love is not difficult to receive. It's ours for the asking and receiving. It's not compli- cated. We do not have to clean up first and attempt to untangle all the prob- lem areas in our life. We just need to receive his gift of free salvation. "For God so loved the world that God's gift of Jesus Christ new job, coupled with a new title or pay raise. Or, maybe the change is a new car, a new home or plans for an exciting vacation trip. Whatever the change, the newness always wears off eventually, and then we are searching again for another something to make us happy and contented.
